Okay, I know this is going to sound mega-lazy, but I do a TON of desktop customization... like literally about 2-3 days of work to get a new desktop fully up to snuff, because I'm a fairly atypical user.

On top of normal gaming and data transfer things (easy), I do a lot of customization for work purposes, configuring linux terminals for easy access, putting certificates in certain secure locations, a lot of OS hardening stuff.

I've been really wanting to upgrade my CPU and mobo which are Ivy-Bridge era, and ideally keep all the rest of my rig (which was recently rebuilt, and a lot of work to do so). I would prefer not having to start from scratch again.

Has anyone here ever done that sort of upgrade without issue? Like take my ivy-bridge mobo/cpu (and RAM I guess) out, and replace with new mobo/cpu - (for example Broadwell or even Kaby Lake era) and still have everything work without having to rebuild?

This is assuming that I stuck to Intel CPU and a mainstream mobo and used the same video card and almost every other component stayed the same.

  2. Changing my MOBO and CPU a

I'm doing PC upgrades and changes entirely for my new mini-itx build.

I'm not sure about how the process would work, but what are the appropriate steps I need to undertake before making my changes?

    • My personal data and files are backed up to my Onedrive, and have nothing to lose in terms of data.
    • I have an additional copy of Windows 10 (but would prefer not to use it in-case I do another PC build).
    • My MOBO and CPU upgrades are polar opposites of my current hardware:
      • OLD HARDWARE
        • Intel i5 6500
        • AsRock Killer MOBO
      • New Hardware
        • AMD Ryzen 7 2700x
        • Asus Strix X-470
This is my first time doing a particular change so guiding steps would be greatly appreciated! Things like how to wipe my hard-drive and reinstall Windows, etc.

You will have to buy windows license if you change the motherboard, unless you made the computer originally in the first place, or bought a license key.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
