Any suggestions for a anti virus software ?

There are so many anti viruses in the market. The last one I used was Nod32. It was on windows 8 pro.
Now on windows 10 I didn't decide yet what to use if at all. Should I have any anti virus software on the pc ? Is the defender built in windows is good enough ? When I google for top anti virus software the first link is 2016/2017 best anti virus softwares by pcmag. The first one in the list is mcafee plus 2016.

There are so many products and I know that some of them make problems with other applications some not working good yet with windows 10 some better more or less. After all they are costing money so it's a bit mess.

    :)

Yepperz, there are a lot of AV products out there & if you ask that question of 10 people, you'll get at least 8 different answers.

First thing, there is nothing out there that can protect you 100% of the time. Actually, your best protection is vigilance & common sense to know when something looks suspicious or not right.

Defender is good for basic protection & many people here use it.

If you are considering using another product instead of Defender, make sure it is compatible with 10 (Some AV products aren't, or at least weren't in the past, that should have changed by now, but do some investigating).

There is a discussion thread over on 7 Forums which is still updated about the various AV's. You may wish to look at it & check out the end pages for more recent comments about various AV's.

    What's the Best Anti-virus? - Windows 7 Help Forums

Also, consider adding to your arsenal some on-demand malware scanners. This is a layered approach & can help catch some things the AV may miss. Malwarebytes & AdwCleaner are good choices & be sure to run scans on a regular basis. Both need to be updated manually, save for if you opt to buy Malwarebytes Premium version, in which case it will be running background scanning in real time & automatically update.

Please be aware that Malwarebytes is not an AV, it is designed to be a malware scanner & does not take the place of a AV.

You also have a line of defense called System Image. Making one of these on a regular basis can be a lifesaver should something go drastically wrong with your OS (Such as Ransomware). Keep the image on a separate HDD not normally hooked up to the PC & make them on a regular basis. Keep several older copies in store in case you inadvertently make one containing malware. You can learn about making them here:

I can recommend nod32, it has a solid database and gets good reviews on Youtube. They are currently running a free beta test of the next version, so why not give that a go.

  7. No single antivirus will going to protect you if you don't use your common sense. Windows Defender + Malwarebytes Pro or Free is what you need for daily basic without annoying you with the notifications or ask you to buy their premium versions.

Your OS already came with a good built in antivirus, why not use them? If you want to tight up your security, you could use anti-executable such as VoodooShield that are more effective than antivirus really.

    Hi:

Sorry to flagellate the deceased equine yet again...*Sad

But, for the OP and anyone else who might happen upon this thread.

MBAM Free does NOT provide real-time protection. It is only a manual, on-demand scanner to REMOVE malware that made it past your AV onto the system.

For real-time, complementary protection to help PREVENT infection alongside one's AV, one needs MBAM Premium*.

I hate to keep harping on this. But we see folks at the MBAM forum rather often who either thought MBAM was an AV, and/or who thought that MBAM Free provides resident anti-malware protection, or both.

I just try to clarify and manage expectations (not sell licenses, as I have absolutely no affiliation with the company).

    Cheers,
    MM

(*The paid version has been called "Premium", not "Pro", since March 2014. I mention this only to prevent someone who might search for "MBAM Pro" on the 'net from downloading or purchasing some sort of fake/rogue version.)

  9. OTOH In addition to the basic free mbam resident code local malware scanners there are free & beta mbam real time web shield scanners like mbam anti ransomware and mbam anti exploit .

BTW I usually only get mbam stuff from malwarebytes .com *Cool

The free mbam anti exploit is hard to find and may be superseded by a paid version but if you can find the free one it still works and updates last time I looked majorgeeks still had it *092

I use those and win 10 defender and so far since I don't use M.S. IE browser > aka M.S. malware funnel or Edge the malware geysers and ransomware thieves been passing me by *really

  10. Hi:

Yes, @electronuser, Malwarebytes (the company) offers many different products.*Smile

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) is the flagship anti-malware application. The difference between Free and Premium are in my previous post. Like one's AV, MBAM targets the "what" of malware, but only the Premium version provides real-time protection.

Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit (MBAE) likewise comes in 2 flavors. MBAE Free does provide real-time anti-exploit protection, but only for a number of browsers and plug-ins. MBAE Premium also shields many other types of applications by default, and can be configured to shield ~any internet-facing application. MBAE works differently from MBAM and one's AV, protecting against the "how" of malware.

Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware BETA (MBARW-BETA) is a specialized anti-ransomware tool that is currently undergoing BETA-testing. It is NOT intended for use in production environments, as advised HERE. Eventually, the technology will be incorporated into MBAM.

There are other Malwarebytes-brand tools, such as MBAR-Beta (Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit BETA), Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) and a range of legacy products and upcoming, new technician tools.

Folks often call Malwarebytes Anti-Malware just "Malwarebytes" for short. However, as you can see, that can be confusing, as it's only the brand name, not the specific product.

OK, that equine is now fully dead and should be buried.*chuckle

    Cheers,
    MM

  13. Any suggestions for a anti virus software ?

    Hi:

Sorry, I was merely quoting the developers, for the safety of "basic"computer users.
Advanced users and early adopters will always be on the cutting or bleeding edge.
And software vendors rely on such users to beta test new products.
But these sophisticated users know how to protect themselves from system damage and/or how to recover from it, in the case of unstable beta software.

Such a detailed discussion or debate would seem to be a bit off-topic for this thread, in which the OP asked about an ANTI-VIRUS, no?

    Cheers,
    MM
