Windows 10: Any Windows program to connect to a remote LINUX GUI

Hi Windows GURUS

Is there any sensible program that can connect to a remote Linux machine showing its GUI (Windowed) desktop - I've head things like vnc can do it -- any ideas though.

What I want is as shown in the following example - OK this is Linux to Linux but you should get the idea of what I want to do (On the Linux machine Host -have krdc and krfb installed (on KDE desktop I'm using). On the remote Linux machine have at least krfb installed - I'd install krdc as well so you can check both ways.

Then using the krdc app with vnc selected you are logged on to your remote machine - even showing a VMWare XP VM running on the Linux desktop too.





selecting RDP also logs on to Windows remote machines (multi concurrent sessions too if you want )

So what I need is now Windows to remote Linux -- every time I try I just get a blank screen for the remote machine.

there doesn't seem to be a way on this planet of making this work at all -- at least in my case.!!

From Windows here's the linux the login screen - the dropdown has about 4 options of session types e.g xorg, vnc etc etc but none of them work - just the green blank scheen after login





I've decided to go for what to some might be a crazy way - but it works.

On the Windows box I've created a tiny LINUX VM with just enough components for VNC , krfb, krdc and freerdp.
Now I use the linux VM to get full desktop access to the remote systems as shown in screenshot below.

The VM uses so little resources even on a modest laptop so that's my choice now.

Here's what the Linux VM (running on a Windows Host) gives from the Windows desktop when accessing remote Linux

Working perfectly !!






I'm not experienced enough to tinker around with Windows to get stuff like this working - but I can mess around with linux systems.

It's definitely though the wayland server that's the problem -- the native Windows login (ist screenshot) login works to a CENTOS VM (CENTOS 7) but that's really old now and is 100% xorg based.

Sometimes as an Engineer rather than a "Pure Scientist" you go with "what works" even though it might not be the best or most elegant solution -- I'll leave that to others to find a pure Windows solution.

Thanks I tried that -- still just get Green login screen asks for user name and password - and then just get blank (green) screen -- protocol is shown as vnc

I suspect that as the vnc connection works for Linux to Linux there's nothing wrong with the vnc servers on those systems (or the clients) so I think I'll have to look at some vnc servers and clients for Windows tiger / tight vnc could be good one --I've some spare Windows VM's i can test this with so it doesnt matter if I completetly trash the system !!

The linux systems are easily reachable via command line from windows via ssh command -- the ssh -X (logon to GUI) doesn't work - but that's known because xorg is the protocol used from windows but a lot of distros (including mine) now don't use xorg any more for the X-server (the thing than displays the GUI) but wayland so there could be an inherent problem with full screen GUI connections to Linux.

For servers that's fine - who really needs a GUI on a dedicated server but for accessing a desktop type installation you really need the GUI and access to the desktop applications !!.

Got plenty of time now to experiment --won't be going anywhere for a while -- seems we now have local lockdown here after people have been going bonkers partying in bars etc etc -- same as elsewhere now I guess Just as we thought we'd escaped all the horrors seen elsewhere.

Keep safe everyone - especially now as summer ends and colder / wetter weather starts arriving.

again @Kari -- I've done more research and the problem is definitely related to the wayland X-server being used rather than xorg -- red hat distros e.g centos can run a sort of "xorg" compatability mode so the tutorial works.

I'd suggest perhaps in modyfying the tutorial once the wayland problems have been sorted out !!!

For info - running 3 linux boxes 2 X arch linux with KDE desktop and standard kernel 5.8.10 and 1 X leading edge development RAWHIDE rel 34 with kernel 5.9.0 fc6 . The arch boxes should work - not bothered about the fedora one as it's "alpha" and "experimental".

For Windows running Windows 10 20H2 and the insider preview build both on W10 pro for workstations.
