Anyone here switched to win10 from general Unix environment?

tl;dr: Long time Linux and Macos user, wants to try out Win10 as home/enthusiast platform while preserving some aspects of the previous environments Anyone here switched to win10 from general Unix environment? :)

So I've stopped using windows as my main desktop OS around.. 1996, I think Anyone here switched to win10 from general Unix environment? :) Used Linux as a general desktop machine for ~10 years, then got disilusioned with the state of the graphic drivers back then. Had a chance to try out a MacOS machine which turned out to be just the right combination of features: semi-sensible Unix commandline, coherent UX, and even some gaming. Recently got disilusioned with the way Apple's desktop offering is going, so I'm evaluating whether Linux of Win10 would suit me. Over the years my focus shifted a bit - less sysadmining at home, more gaming - which makes Linux less than ideal candidate.

Right now I've put together a Win10 machine that I plan to use for testing whether I would be able to live with Windows day to day. The requirements are as follows:

    • Basic functionality of the windowmanager should be keybindable; win+cursors are a blessing, and powertoy's FancyZones is looking good. On Mac I'm using Moom which is not only very flexible but also has prefix-based shortcuts - it'd be nice to achieve that.
    • Ideally, I'd like to get a normal posix shell (okay, zsh 8) to handle file management and basic scripting. By now it's my second nature, and trying to do things via explorer-like filemanagers is just too frustrating. I know about WSL and waiting for WSL2 to appear in normal user builds (28 May?). I hope it'd give me a normal Linux cli coupled with native filesystem access and no slowdowns.
    • Along the same lines, I need a place for tinkering: some light development, Python, Rust, embedded flavour of the day. Push comes to shove I can just outsource that to the home Linux server (is putty still the ssh client of choice? Anyone here switched to win10 from general Unix environment? :), but I'd like to at least try and see if things work. Is win32's vim build sane, do most plugins work? I take it docker works fine, now with virtualisation being a part of the Windows OS.
    • I have two commercial "anchors" binding me to MacOS - one is Lightroom, the other is Banktivity (personal finance). The former should be easy to test and move, the latter will probably be a nightmare as I had nothing but bad experience moving financial data between different pieces of software.
    • Any general Windows information for Linux users would be nice... I get a feeling that there's directory separation, some semblance of XDG structure maybe? Some general "X there is Y here" would be useful, I think.

I'm not asking about obvious things - games will run, browser-based stuff will run, mpv is there... in general, I'm confident about the "user" part of the user experience, it's the power-user/admin bit that's unknown.

I'm looking for any non-obvious utilities, that people who switched similar way would find useful. For example, I wanted to switch keyboard modifiers (capslock->ctrl, leftwin<->leftctrl), turned out that my choices are Autohotkey which has some really weird problems with modifiers, or Sharpkeys, which essentially just generates a regedit snippet Anyone here switched to win10 from general Unix environment? :) There's probably plenty more of things like that; from tiny things like Moom (mentioned earlier) to more substantial pieces like time-machine like backup program. Or maybe just things dealing with problems that I'm not even aware of, but likely to crash into coming from my background Anyone here switched to win10 from general Unix environment? :D

    Any recommendations/hints appreciated!

  2. Unix Commands in Windows Power Shell

    Dear Microsoft,

I would like to thank you for emulating the Unix commands in the Windows 10 PowerShell. I have been migrating my development environment from Unix to Windows and being able to use my Unix muscle memory to list, copy, remove, and execute files has been a

    System environment variable won't stick

Running Win10 Home on an Acer Spin 3, 64bit, i7cpu. I try to add a path to the system environment variables by:

    1. Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Advanced tab > Environment variables

    2. The "Environment Variables" window opens.
    3. In the "System Variables" pane I select "Path" and click the EDIT button.
    4. A list of the current system paths is displayed.
    5. I click the NEW button, browse to the path I want to add which is "C:\Python36-32" and click OK. The path "C:\Python36-32" is added to the list of current system paths.
    6. I click OK and am returned to the "Environment Variables" window.
    7. I click the "X" at the top right to close the "Environment Variables" window.

Now if I click the "Environment Variables" button again (end of step-1) and repeat steps 2-4, the new path I added in step-5 is gone. IOW, adding a new path won't stick.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Which Unix Do You Use?

An embedded Linux on my NAS *Smile Anyone here switched to win10 from general Unix environment? :)

Also, since this is about Unix based OSes, why is everyone listing their Windows version? Besides, how is Unix related to a mac vs PC discussion?
