4K monitor displaying from 1080p laptop

    Hi Sean,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

    We would need some information.

May I know the Make and the Model of the Laptop?

Graphic card of the Laptop should be compatible with the 4k Monitor to play 4k Video

Refer this link to check the Compatibility list:
    Dell Compatibility list.

    Hope it helps.

Icons move to the left on a 4K monitor

    Hi Everyone,

I am having a great problem with my 4K monitor (LG 27MU67-B)connected to a Nvidia GTX980 via Displayport. I am using the monitor in native resolution (3840 x
2160) with a zoom factor of 175%. The Windows version is Windows 10 Home.

The problem is: After standby all icons on the desktop move to upper left corner.

You can find hundreds of thread regarding this problem but no solution, because I think this behavior is by design.

When the PC is in standby mode the monitor also enters his standby mode. When the computer awakes the monitor is still in standby and Windows thinks there is no monitor and uses a virtual monitor with lower resolution instead. Then it moves all
icons to fit on this virtual monitor. Now the real monitor awakes and all icons stay in the upper left corner.

You can also see this behavior, when switching the monitor off and on or just pulling the Displayport-Cable and reasserting it.

Some people say this is a monitor problem, some say this is a graphic card problem. They may be right, but after all this is a great problem for the user. And Microsoft should be able to solve this problem.

This does not happen when using DVI-Cables, but this is no option for 4K.

I think the best solution would be, when Windows remembers the icon positions for each resolution. But even a behavior like with DVI (ignoring the detached monitor) would be helpful too. Or Windows should set the virtual monitor to the same
resolution like the real monitor. And there may be other solutions.

However the current behavior makes it nearly impossible to work with windows. Tools like DesktopOK help a little bit, but cannot be the solution!

Hope someone from Microsoft reads this and sees this is really a problem.

However if someone else has a solution, don’t hesitate to post it.

Triple monitor issue - left monitor not woken up from sleep during bootup

I have an issue with my triple monitor setup where the left monitor is not woken up from sleep during Windows bootup. Turning the monitor off and then on finally causes it to be recognized. One time though, doing this caused a BSoD with CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED
error - the process in question was ntoskrnl.exe.

More specifically, my setup is as follows:

    • All 3 monitors are 28'' and running at 4K @ 60 Hz
    • The central (primary) monitor is Acer XB280HK which is G-SYNC capable
    • Both left and right monitors are ASUS PB287Q which are not G-SYNC capable
    • My desktop is extended to the left and to the right from the central monitor

This issue is possibly related to something else I've noticed: When a DirectX application switches the central monitor to full screen, it causes the right monitor to blank out twice in a row, but the left monitor never blanks out. This is very annoying visually.
It also makes me wonder why the right monitor is treated differently from the left monitor. I think this issue may be related to the left monitor not being woken up from sleep during Windows startup.

An OpenGL application blanks out neither the left nor the right monitor when switching the central monitor to full screen.

I don't know how to even begin troubleshooting this issue. Anyone can help?

    Thanks!

    System specs:

    Intel Core i7-5960X

    ASUS Sabertooth X99

Corsair 64 GB 2133 MHz RAM

2 x ASUS Strix GeForce 980 Ti SLI

Intel 750 Series 1.2 TB SSD

    3 x 4K 28'' monitors (2 x ASUS ASUS PB287Q & 1 x Acer XB280HK with G-SYNC)

    Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
