Windows 10: Anyone's OneNote revert back to old pen system just now?

Just when I got used to the new OneNote update with the pens-- it went away again! Also, I don't seem to have the ruler function anymore...super frustrating when it changes all of a sudden in the middle of taking notes in class. I love Windows products, but my iPad friends never seem to have issues like this :/

Pen and Onenote

Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

When you are using pen, you can set the device to ignore the touch, to make the changes you can follow the steps below.

1. May I know, if you are using OneNote App from Store or OneNote that comes with Microsoft Office and Outlook?

2. If you are using Microsoft Office and Outlook, May I know which version of it is?

Method 1:
Ignore touch input when I’m using my pen.

Navigate to Settings > Devices > Pen & Windows Ink.

From the Right pane under Pen, check
Ignore touch input when I’m using my pen.

Method 2: Turn Touch Mode on or off.

I suggest you to check the article
Turn Touch Mode on or off for OneNote that comes with Office and Outlook, try the troubleshooting steps and check if this help you.

Enhanced Pen & Ink experience in Quick Notes in OneNote on Windows

Hi, Office Insiders, my name is Katie Sullivan and I’m a Product Manager on the Office Natural User Interface team. I’m excited to share that we are rolling out improvements to the Pen & Ink experience when creating or editing Quick Notes in OneNote on Windows!

Quick Notes

The need to capture an idea or a thought can come at any moment. Quick Notes enable you to jot down a reminder or note, sketch a quick concept with ink, or annotate a note or image. Think of them as the electronic equivalent of little yellow sticky notes, except better because they are instantly saved to your OneNote notebook, and can be searched and organized.

Today, you can already create a Quick Note by pressing the Windows key + Alt + N or clicking the OneNote icon on the system tray. Starting with the Windows 11 2022 Update, you now have another way to create a Quick Note directly from your pen!

How it works

1. To create a Quick Note, just click the back of your pen and start writing.

2. To display or hide the new pen toolbar, click the pen icon in the Quick Note.

3. Use the pen toolbar to choose between ink tools (Select, Eraser, and Pens), and to add to and edit the contents of your Quick Note.

And the pen toolbar is not just for pen users – Mouse and touch users can access it for easy and fast inking in Quick Notes as well!

Scenarios to try

Jot down a quick reminder or note with your pen.

Sketch a quick concept with ink.

Paste a screenshot and use ink to annotate it.

Known Issues

While using the pen in Select mode, the cursor may switch back to the Pen tool if you try to tap on ink.

Requirements

Windows 11 2022 update and OneNote on Windows installed in order to click the back of the pen to create a Quick Note.

Pen must be a Surface pen with a shortcut button.

Availability 

The pen toolbar is available to Beta Channel users running Version 2211 (Build 15729.20002) or later. Note that this feature is not available on OneNote for Windows 10.

Pen Focused View in OneNote on Windows

Hi, Office Insiders! My name is Pratik Das and I’m a Product Manager on the Office Natural User Interface team. I’m excited to share that we are rolling out the Pen Focused View in OneNote!

Pen Focused View

The Pen Focused View enables you to create with your pen without any distractions. The view comes with a Pen toolbar that includes all your favorite customized pen tools. Now you can focus on notetaking during a lecture or a brainstorming session – no more distractions!

How it works

1. To launch the Pen Focused View, click either Draw Tab > Full Page View or the Expand icon.

If you have a Surface pen that undocks from your device, OneNote will automatically switch to this view when the pen is undocked. The first time you do so, you will see a screen that introduces the Pen Focused View.

NOTE: You can turn off this setting by selecting File > Options > Advanced and clearing the Switch to focused inking when pen is undocked check box.

2. To display or hide the Pen toolbar in Pen Focused View, click the Show Pen Toolbar or Hide Pen Toolbar button from the top right corner.

3. Use the Pen toolbar to select ink tools (Undo, Redo, Select Objects or Type Text, Lasso Select, Stroke Eraser, and pens) while taking, formatting, or editing your notes on your OneNote page. You can also customize your pens tools (change color & thickness) directly from the Pen toolbar.

And the Pen toolbar is not just for pen users – Mouse and touch users can access it as well!  

Scenarios to try

Jot down notes with your pen during a meeting, lecture, or training session.

Brainstorm a concept with ink.

Paste a screenshot and use ink to add ink annotations.
