Windows 10: App that was woring now fails to start with an error 0xc0000005

G'day folks...

Computer running Win 10 Pro with all the latest updates.


I have an app I've been running on Windows computers for many, many years including being installed on Win 10 without any major hitches.


Until a few weeks ago this app worked perfectly okay on this machine, then suddenly it fails to run and nothing I've tried will get it to run.


The Event viewer show an error 0xc0000005 when an attempt is made to run it.


This error is so broad and relatively meaningless I can't understand what it means... Can anyone?

I have two other Win 10 machines, one running Win 10 Pro the other a laptop running Win 10 home, both fully updated.


Both of the other machines continue to run this app without any problems.


If I transfer the app that won't run on the errant machine to the other machine that's okay, the app runs okay.


If I transfer a good working app from the the two other okay machines to the errant machine, the app will not run.


What's going on?

Is there a way to fix this code: 0xc0000005 error or whatever it is?

Hi Samuel,

If running your antivirus software to scan for malicious programs does not help, I suggest disabling Data Execution Prevention. It's a built-in feature on Windows for protecting your computer. Some programs may not be compatible with this feature and opening
the app or game will cause 0xc0000005 error.

To disable it, log in using an admin account and follow these steps:

1. Press Windows key + R, type sysdm.cpl and press
   Enter.
2. Click the Advanced tab > Settings button.
3. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
4. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
   
5. Click Add and open the problematic executable file/game.
6. Click OK.

Windows 10, 2004 update fails on appraiser.dll with error code 0xC0000005

I tried to install Windows 2004, and I get the error code 0xC0000005. Looking at the logs from the installation in the Panther directory, I see the following:

Exception (code 0xC0000005: ACCESS_VIOLATION) occurred at 0x00007FFEA182D8C1 in C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\appraiser.dll

I was able to read the dump file for this error, and I see the check failing on this step:
