    Appearing and disappearing files!

Could someone please explain this to me? In Windows 10, I have a folder called GOONS. I put some files in it. But when I looked at it a while later, many more files were there! And then the next time I looked, they were gone! I wanna be able to put the files I want, in a given folder... and not have them disappear, or all of a sudden, see a million other files in that folder with them! I can't organize my stuff if this keeps happening!!!!!! *Sad This is THE SAME folder, with THE SAME PATH! I'm thinking that if I'm working with a file I saved in Photoshop, then I might only see the Photoshop files in GOONS. And if I'm working with a file I saved in Adobe Illustrator, then I'll only see Illustrator files there. That's CRAZY! If that's what's happening, how do I fix it!

Can someone please help? Thanx in advance for any info on this. *Sad

    :)

I know, because I responded to
    your thread
last week. We're all waiting for MS to acknowledge and perhaps fix the bug one day.

Do you have a printer connected to your Sony Vaio?

If you do, disconnect it and see if Drive Z: disappears. Sometimes the print spooler is causing this.

All over the Web users are having this issue. And there is no consistent fix to the issue.

It is not a virus, but can have many possible causes, because of the way things get mapped in Windows (Print spoolers, system variables, logical partitions . . . etc.)

You say the drive appears and disappears, can you narrow down what is causing it by watching what you are doing when the drive appears or disappears?

Honestly I would not worry about it!

    Appearing and disappearing files!

Hi Mr. Mag00. Could you please post some examples of the behavior that you're describing using the windows snipping tool? Without more information its going be very difficult to offer any constructive help. The things that your describing could be caused by many different things (some completely normal) and nobody wants to send you off on a wild goose chase (or maybe a wild GOONS chase until we know exactly what's happening.

In EXAMPLE 1, I was saving one file to the folder, actually named GOONdoggles, expecting to see the files I already put in that folder... but instead, I saw these Photoshop files.

In EXAMPLE 2, I arrived at the folder by navigating through file explorer, and when I got there, I saw files from lots of different places. I had only put a few files in that folder but I'm seeing a ZILLION other files there. I can't even decide which files I wanted to be in there!

I think nothing is wrong. In the first example you are looking at the folder through Photoshop and if you'll notice at the bottom only files associated with Photoshop are selected to be shown. It essentially a filtered view.

In example two you are viewing the files through explorer and it shows all files. There is no filter. That's why you see so many more files. You will notice that everything you see in example 1 is also shown in example 2. If you looked in the folder through the another program such as MS Word you would only see file types that are associated with Word. However most programs allow you to expand the types of files they show with the drop down choices at the bottom of the window. Try it with a few other programs using the save or open options and you'll see what I mean.

I thought that was what was going on but I wanted to be sure before I told you something that might not be correct. You are good to go. If you agree please mark the thread as solved so others might be helped.

OK, I should mention that my eyesight is very poor. So maybe I need more help in finding what you're talking about. All I see is the text-field that says what file-type you wanna save your file as. I don't see anything that says what file-types should be "shown" in the given folder.

    Appearing and disappearing files!

Each program such as Word, Excel, Photoshop, will have slightly different options for saving and also for opening depending on their capabilities for reading and writing different file types. In other words they will only 'see' the file type that they can use. They are not intended to be used to browse files for any application but their own. For example Photoshop won't open or save a .DOC FILE or .XLS file so you won't see those file types displayed or as options for saving. Remember that Explorer will show any file type but specific application won't. Does this help?

  9. Look at Save as type:

    Appearing and disappearing files! [IMG]

Save as type: not only species the file type, but it also defines the file types presented in the save window.
You only see PSD files because Photoshop (*.PSD, *.PDD, *.PSDT) is in the Save as type: field.

Some applications have other types or allow you to see All types using the drop down list.

The same might apply to Open file

    Sofine409 gave a nice description - a picture is worth ....

I guess they do that so you can see the file names of other files of that type. It throws me off every once in a while too.

Thanks Slartybart. Pix is great. I mostly browse threads on iPad and I'm too lazy to fire up the PC to upload pix. Retirement has made me lazy. Lesson learned.

  11. No sweat Bob,

that's one of the great things about TF - one member amplifies another member's information.

Sometimes I'm too lazy to switch machines too, so I might search the web and paste an image from somewhere else that shows the example. The tutorial section has lots of pics. Use the from URL when attaching an image from another page and check local copy to avoid hot links.

But ... I'm not always that motivated *Smile

Is there a way to tell the program to display the folder the same way no matter where you look at it from?

But even if there isn't, you guys cleared this up for me. Thanx totally. *Smile

I think there should be a "default" folder for each app that files automatically get saved to unless you choose to put the file in with the other GOONdoggle files, (that may include files from other applications.

I think Windows 10 is even worse than Windows 8! The search engine sucks! I typed "office," and it didn't find anything! Only if I got the complete app name, did it find "LibreOffice." *Sad Isn't there a way to get it to find anything with the word "office" in it? I can't always remember the exact name of something I'm searching for.

    Appearing and disappearing files!

Glad we could help. Sometimes the simple things are the hardest to explain.

I think there are a couple of threads on the forum about the search issues with the AV update and some recommendations for 3rd party software that works much better. you should check them out. Please mark the thread as solved to help others who may have the same question as you did.

  14. Sorry Magoo, I don't know how to make ALL applications show their save/open windows give you all file types.

The Save as type: field in some applications have an All files (*.*) option in the drop down list - that's the best I can offer.

Cortana search has to improve a LOT.

File Explorer search hasn't changed much from Windows 7 - that's what I use. If I can't remember where I put a file, I just start the search from This PC. They keep trying to make Search easier - so things change from version to version (or even in a version).

One of the best things once you put the cursor in the search box, a Search menu appears on File Explorer. If you look at the Refine section, poke around with all of those options. Kind is cool -

    kind:=document
-> finds all file types that are defined as a document

    kind:=document datemodified:yesterday
-> finds all file types that are defined as a document that were modified yesterday

It's really powerful once you get the hang of it.
Here's a fair reference: Advanced Query Syntax (Windows)

I had another one - ironically I cannot find it (not a search issue - I must have archived it *Wink)

Here's a thread discussing alternatives to Windows Search: What is the best desktop search replacement for windows 10? - Windows 10 Forums
