  3. What sort of software do you get if you pay programmers nothing?

It's interesting to note that if you go on some iPhone forums you get exactly the opposite opinion - i.e. that Apple are wrong to screen apps and should open it up.

I'm not having a go at you - I think that I agree with you by and large, but it would require a massive change of direction from Nokia to lock down their handsets and force approved app updating through Ovi. It would effectively push them into direct competition
with Apple and apart from the fact that they don't have stable enough hardware, firmware or software to do this, they just don't have the models, marketing or mindset to make the iPod fanbois jump ship.

I find these statistics hard to believe. More than likely it's a very limited meaning of "device activations" and "enterprise". Google literally has 3x as many devices out there, so I find it hard to believe, and I don't believe enterprises are springing for iPhone 6's for everyone.

Yes, he based his article in reference to a one "Good Technology's Mobility Index Report".

    Mobility Index Report

Unfortunately one cannot view the report unless one signs up and I'm not willing to go those lengths. Also, it is relying on just one report.

Either way, it's no secret that iPhone and Android dominate the phone market with a greater percentage. I think Windows phone sales will increase in the long haul. How much is anyone's guess, but as he pointed out there's definitely a higher and higher demand for mobile devices.

What struck me in the the article is the potential of MS's business model. While not doing all that well on the phone end, MS is making good progress with the Surface and then Continuum in the forecast. With BYOD on the rise employees will simply dock a device as a full-blown PC. The Surface already performs well in that environment. With the power increasing in phablet form that could very well be feasible as well. As a side note, I read that MS is about to release a nine-inch phablet. If so then one only needs to carry one device around.

With that scenario, the advantage for employers is they only need to supply the docking station, not a tower PC, laptop, or any workstation. Money saved. Of course they still need IT to support the system and servers also. The cloud services I would think will eliminate servers in some scenarios.

BTW, I'm actually speaking this into my Lumia 1520 to copy and paste into the forum text box. Why? Because technology is allowing me to be more and more mobile as time goes on. I'll sit more behind my PC during winter, but often times I enjoy being outdoors during the summer months. Of course I might not need a tower. A docking station will suffice.

We'll probably never see the total elimination of the tower PC in our lifetime, but I think it's inevitable. Of course I'm speaking as a sixty-four-year-old. *Wink

Does anyone think Microsoft will ever realize their Windows 8/10/Phone UI is just plain ugly....! A little elegance goes a long way, not to mention color choices.

Everyones preferences are different. I find the UI quite elegant actually. I find the iPhone UI horrible. And Android is just a sea of icons that have very little feedback.

Obviously some people haven't owned nor seen too many Windows phones lately. *Wink From my Lumia 1520 with 8.1. If some find it ugly so be it.

Looks is one thing, but navigation is another. Working construction I've owned cell phones since the bags > then a brick > then a few two-ways > then a Razor > then a Droid > now a Lumia. Of course the tech has advanced, but this phone is far superior in navigation than the icon-filled Droid I had. More personalization by far. Don't forget the live tiles. Much more functional than the dead icon. *Smile

    How about multitasking?

    Lock screen:

Then there's the peek screen if I hold my hand over it briefly of which I can't take a screenshot. It's basically the lock screen with a black background and white lettering. Easy on the eyes in the middle of the night.

Quite honestly I haven't seen the latest iPhones or Androids, but can they take screenshots?

I'd love a Windows phone but until the major apps that I use start creating for Windows phone then I won't be touching it. Shame really, I hate Apple but am stuck with my iPhone as it does what I need it to.

    Yes they can.

    Hi there

with phones - it's 100% a matter of preference -- I find the use of the iPhone quite counter intuitive - especially the navigation BACK type of system. It's what you are used to. I quite like the Samsung S6 with the metal and curved screen corners but what puts me off that phone is the non removable battery - especially if you are out in the wild a lot and don't always have access to a charger -- swapping a battery is simple and easy.

I actually also LIKE the windows UI on a windows phone --I just don't like the HANDSETS -- they look like something designed out of the old East Germany / Soviet era -- if it was buildings we were talking about we would call the architecture "Stalin Brutalist Mode".

I'm sticking with my S5 for the moment -- nothing wrong with it at all. I would have gone Windows except for (IMO) the HIDEOUS handsets available.

Employ a few of those snazzy "Italian" designers of fairly liberal sexual beliefs and I'm sure you'd increase the sale of Windows phones by a significant amount. - Who ever said things like Ferrari's / Ducatti's etc were ever HIDEOUS looking !!!.

    Cheers

It's not 100% preference though. I'd prefer a Windows phone but it doesn't have the most important apps I want/need so therefore it's no good for me. I don't prefer to use an iPhone but do because it has what I need out of a mobile phone.

Now that App developers will be able to easily port native iOS apps to Windows Mobile, we should start seeing a lot more iPhone apps on Windows.

Nowadays, external battery packs you plug into your phone to recharge them are cheap.. usually a lot cheaper than the official replacement battery for your phone. They are pretty versatile, some can even jump-start a car.

I know the world may be coming to an end by my saying this... but I agree with you. *Wink

Actually, I've been saying that for a long time. The primary reason Windows Phone has such a low market share is lack of compelling handsets. And when they do have a compelling model, it's often only available on one carrier.

I'm really hoping Microsoft follows through on the rumor that they may provide Windows 10 ROMS for android phones.
