Windows 10: Applications changing to a different monitor when monitors close after idle

Hello, I would like to report an issue that has been happening to me pretty much since Windows XP. Not sure if it was happening before in Windows 3.1/95/98.I have a setup with two monitors. When the monitors close after idle, all applications are automatically going to my main monitor. As a result, everytime I wake up the monitors, I have to manually switch all the apps back to the secondary monitor.I would like to know if there is a way to keep the applications where they are?

In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, we would need some information.

1. What is the version and
   build of you operating system? In the Search box, type
   winver to get this info.
   
2. May I know the Make and the model of the computer and external monitor?
   
3. Are you aware of any changes made on your computer before this issue occurred?
   

We also suggest following the steps below and check if it makes any difference.

Since you are facing issue with the Secondary monitor, I would suggest you to
Troubleshoot external monitor connections in Windows 10
and check if it fixes the issue.

Additionally refer this article on Second
screen or Projector mode does not persist after you close and reopen a laptop lid.

Trouble with 2 monitors

Hi Tim,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I suggest you to change the settings to Extended Monitor and check if it helps.

Please follow below steps:

• Right Click any ware of the Desktop, and launch Personalization.
• Go to dual monitor settings under personalization, and change it Extended Monitor.

Applications Not Opening on my External Monitor

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.



As you are able to view the desktop and task bar on the external monitor, I suggest you to drag the applications from the laptop screen on to the external monitor and check the result.



However, Windows 10 will open the applications on the primary monitor.

Windows retains the position of the application that is opened, if the application is opened and dragged to the secondary monitor, upon closing the application and reopening it. The application will open on the secondary monitor.
