  1. Applications opening on ghost monitor

I have a user who has a Dell Latitude 7320 Detachable tablet and works out in the city most of the day. He does not bring a detachable keyboard with him, just the tablet itself. When he comes back to the office, he uses a Dell Docking station connected to dual monitors and a separate keyboard and mouse. The problem that he is having is when he brings his tablet out in the field without his keyboard and mouse, some of his applications want to open on a "ghost monitor." Windows must be thinking he is still connected to his dual monitors. I have seen this issue before, and normally for users with

Windows opens programs on a second monitor, that is not connected

Hi, I am an Independent Advisor.

Let me help you with this concern.

I understand that the application that you are trying to open up goes to the nonexistent 2nd monitor.

You may be experiencing a ghost monitor, a 2nd monitor that is not connected but getting detected by Windows.

To get this fixed, please follow the steps below.

Please click on the Start menu then type in Control Panel.

    Go to Devices and Printers.

Right-click and remove any excess generic PnP monitors from Devices and Printers in the Control Panel.

Then please open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start Menu then open Device Manager from the list.

Expand Monitors, then right-click and uninstall any Generic PnP monitor(s) appearing in Device Manager.

In case the above steps don't work, please visit the support website of your device and then download and install the latest video driver. Please make sure to restart the PC after a successful install.

Applications Not Opening on my External Monitor

    Hello,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

As you are able to view the desktop and task bar on the external monitor, I suggest you to drag the applications from the laptop screen on to the external monitor and check the result.

However, Windows 10 will open the applications on the primary monitor.

Windows retains the position of the application that is opened, if the application is opened and dragged to the secondary monitor, upon closing the application and reopening it. The application will open on the secondary monitor.

    Hope it helps.

    Regards,

    Applications opening on ghost monitor

Open a Program on any Monitor where I open at?

    Hi,

Regardless of how many monitors are set up on a computer, one main display is allowed. For your security, we cannot offer any third-party applications that are not approved by Microsoft.

Alternatively, you can follow the steps below on how can an application open in a specific monitor:

    • Open an application, then drag it to the monitor you want it to open.
    • Restore down the application (window mode). To do so, press the Windows
key + the Arrow down key on your keyboard.
    • Close the application by clicking the X mark icon.
    • Relaunch the application to confirm.

Note that this workaround may or may not work for all applications.

Feel free to post back if you need further assistance.
