appmodel (2) - burst of CPU use for a few minutes occasionally- why?

Hi, I've upgraded from 8.1 Pro to Win 10, and have been using it for some weeks.

Initially, whilst getting Win 10 into a usable state, the CPU use associated with appmodel (tiledataserver) with a couple of others (customer experience, Windows Defender) was a real problem, but only for the first few days.

Normally, CPU use when idle is under 10%. However, every so often- maybe not even every day- I become aware of a burst of CPU use as shown lasting several minutes. Note this doesn't seem to be updates (no network activity) unless the download occurred before this.

Has anyone else noticed this? Thanks.

    Slowdowns, appmodel/svchost using 100% CPU

A few days ago I started noticing slowdowns on my computer. I checked the task manager and found appmodel taking up 100% of the CPU, this occurs in Safe Mode as well.

I've tried returning to a backup, the system recovery, and a full scan by Norton.

I managed to restart the processes associated with appmodel in Safe Mode, which dropped CPU usage down to 75%, however it rapidly went back up again.

I am unable to left click to bring up the start menu, although I can right click it. So I can't get on Settings to check for an update.

In Safe Mode the task manager works, however in the normal mode it only works for a few minutes after the computer comes online, then becomes unresponsive.

Would a clean install work to fix this? I don't think I can kill appmodel, or the svchost associated with it.

  3. Appmodel's process eats 30-100% CPU

Today I made a clean installation of Windows 10 from latest installation media. I continuously get UI freezes for minutes. Task Manager shows me a process "appmodel" which uses most time more than 30 percent of CPU. Why it is so and how to fix it?

appmodel (2) - burst of CPU use for a few minutes occasionally- why?

Does the CPU usage ever get up to over 95%? The particular process may be reacting to updates, does the Windows Store do any automatic updating? Mostly I have to tell it to update certain apps, so I don't know if that would be the cause. As long as it does not go above 60% or so. Does this happen when any Tile apps are opened? Some tile apps like Dropbox or other cloud services may sync to your cloud space on occasion.

Hi XWeAponX, thanks, I'll try with Onedrive (which I don't use) disabled. I don't use tiled apps in general- just traditional desktop programs- I use Classic Shell not the Win 10 start menu - which still is subject to the 512 start menu shortcuts limit and is a poor relation to Classic Shell.

I can't think of a way to prove a link to updates as when I happen to notice it there doesn't seem to be any network activity.

CPU use is almost always below 50%.
