Apps will not save files inside User folder.

    Hi!
Any applications which give me a save dialog box don't allow me to save inside my user folder, for example saving an .ai file in Adobe Illustrator or an OBJ file from Cinema 4D. This started after updating to build 10240. When saving, I receive the error
Code: C:\Users\\Documents\Adobe\ai\test.ai You don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission. Would you like to save in the Documents folder instead?[/quote] the "would you like to save in the documents folder" section changes based on the program, for example paint asks me if I'd like to save in pictures instead. However, the base folder \Documents\ doesn't allow me to save either and gives me the same error. I can only save in C:\Users\, folders before that (for example C:\) and other folders such as the AppData, but none of my libraries.

Additionally, I can move the files from my user folder to the correct folder using Windows Explorer, but that's about it.

Has anyone else been receiving this issue, or is anyone aware of a way I can fix this issue? I've already tried restarting my computer a couple times but I'm not sure what else I could do.

    Thanks!

EDIT: I forgot to add that I am on the ONLY account on the system, which is an Administrator account.

    :)

    Can't reset laptop.

HOLY SMACKERAL! Found them, found the files I wanted to save! They were indeed within a user folder but inside the One Drive folder.

Thank you so much! Apps will not save files inside User folder. :D

    locating files and folders

    Hi Jim,

Open the Settings App (Gear icon on your Start Menu)

    Go to Personalisation - Themes

At the top right, click 'Desktop Icon Settings'

Check the box marked 'Users Files'

    Save and close that dialog

Now, whenever you need to see your files, on your Desktop will be a new icon that looks like a person on a folder, double click that to see your library folders and inside those folders will be your files. . .

Apps will not save files inside User folder.

I just created a Folder in C:\Users\\Documents named Test 1 then opened a small text file and resaved it into the Test 1 Folder, worked fine. I've had issues at times in other versions of Windows in trying to save into a Libraries Folder so go directly to where the actual files reside.

That gives me the same error, unfortunately.

  6. What are the current security settings for your Documents folder

    Right click Documents
    Select properties
    press the security tab
press the [ advanced ] button

I took a look at my folder and saw something strange. There are 'duplicate entries for each object. One set has inheritance, the other set does not. I believe the 'normal' settings are to inherit from the User folder.

The user folder (C:\Users\) is owned by System, the folders under your User folder (Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, etc) are owned by you. Your login Id should appear on both with full control selected.

You might try right clicking on Libraries in the File Explorer navigation pane and
    Select Restore default libraries

I didn't have the same duplicate entries as you, but my user account didn't have Full Control. I just gave it full control and clicked "apply" but a bunch of objects are giving me "Failed to enumerate objects in the container. Access is denied." while others worked fine.

Here are the security settings I have for documents now:

I just did the "restore default libraries" thing since changing the security settings didn't seem to fix it, and now I can save stuff in Documents only. I still can't save in Pictures, which is odd.

When looking at the Pictures security settings, my account isn't listed on there at all.

Ok, some improvement. The 'errors' you got on your user folder were most likely due to MS credentials and certificates in Appdata. That should not be an issue - I get that too.

I think the easiest way to 'correct' this is on a one-by-one folder change. It might have been a combination of the security change and resetting the Libraries, so check / modify the other folders and then if necessary reset the Libraries again.

Add your user ID to any of your sub-folders and give it full control, just as you did for Documents (alternatively change an existing entry for your User Id to full control).

You probably only need to do this for the User system folders (Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos). Other User system folders might not need modification (OneDrive ????)

If you have a home network, there might be additional considerations, but focus on just your local account.

Please post an updated status - that's all I have.

    Good luck

    Bill

I tried doing this, but gave up when I couldn't figure out how to add my user account. However, I just tried again since you said that's the easiest way to correct it (it turns out I had to click advanced and scan for the account to add it correctly) and it works! At least for now, it seems to be solved.
    Thanks for your help!
