  1. April 2018 update broke Chrome browser (Cryptographic Services bug)

I updated to the April 2018 version of Win10 a couple months ago. It caused several issues and broke my Chrome browser completely, so I reverted back to the old version. But Microsoft forced another update on me, so I need this issue fixed somehow.

All the googling I've done says Microsoft has "fixed" this issue with the April update breaking Chrome, but I've installed all patches and they clearly haven't, not in my case. Pages simply refuse to load and time out.

I've narrowed the issue down to the "Cryptographic Services" service. If I stop the service, all of the Chrome pages instantly load and I have no issues for about an hour. It seems to be some sort of issue with certificates/SSL.

The problem is the service keeps restarting itself. I've tried setting it to "disabled," tried unchecking the service in System Configuration, nothing works. It always comes back and Chrome breaks. I'm sure there's good reason to keep it running but I'm not going to let Microsoft force me out of my favorite browser/bookmarks/extensions/etc. like this, and I can't keep stopping a service every hour just to browse the web.

So I need a solution please. And something specifically related to fixing the issue with Cryptographic Services preventing SSL on Chrome. I've done all the basic stuff like reinstalling Chrome, checking firewall settings, etc..

    :)

Possible minor bug - Update with both Opera 2x & Google Chrome installed

Strange bug: Running the previous-older version of GPU-Z on Windows 7, 64-bit, SP1 and trying to update GPU-Z. Have Opera 23/24 installed as a 2ndary web browser, and Google Chrome installed as default/main web browser.
    Steps that work fine:
    1) Run GPU-Z whatever version.
    2) Open About.
    3) Click the links.
Result: Links open correctly in default browser - Google Chrome.

    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1) Run GPU-Z, version before latest.
    2) Try to check for updates.
    3) GPU-Z says an update is available.
    4) Tell it to show the update.
Result: Link opens incorrectly in Opera 23/24, instead of default Google Chrome web browser.
Expected: Open in Google Chrome instead.

Note: Opera 23/24 uses the same core as Google Chrome.

Please check and fix, if necessary.

Google Chrome Broken after April 2018 and May 2018 Win 10 Release

    Hi-

I updated my Win 10 to the April 2018 release and Google Chrome broke with this release. Several articles on the internet confirmed this. Then, the May 2018 release was supposed to fix something with Chrome, but it has not with mine.

Chrome is very unstable. It will work for a few sites then eventually not be able to reach a site, saying there is no connection. I did everything the Chrome board suggested and only brought back some stability but I still have the issue.

The May 2018 notes say it fixed a Chrome crashing issue. My Chrome doesn't "crash", it just stop working/connecting to pages.

Anyone at MS know about this?

    Dan

    PS: Edge works fine.

Services missing after applying April 2018 Update (1803) to Windows 10

Multiple customers have reached out to me because a Windows Service that I have made is missing after applying April 2018 Update (1803) to Windows 10.

Some customers have also reported that other services are missing, like Cisco VPN client.

I’m able to repro using the following:

    • Install Windows 10 Pro x64 version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) from MSDN.
    • Run the installer for my service, and verify that it’s in the service-list.

I have also tried to manually create the service using SC / InstallUtil, with the same outcome.
    • Restart the machine.
    • (Re-)validate that the service exists, and that it works as intended.
    • Update the machine with the newest updates, including 1803 (April 2018 Update).
    • Restart the machine as part of the update.
Result: The application-files still exist, however, the service is no longer registered.

Running the installer again, or re-creating the service manually using SC/InstallUtil works.

Have Microsoft put new rules in place for services or what’s happening?

The service itself is a very basic service with a valid digital signature.

It is installed in the users local AppData-folder (%localappdata%).

The following updates are applied in step 5:

    • Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803
    • Security update for Adobe Flash Player: June 7, 2018 [KB 4287903]
    • Definition Update for Windows Defender Antivirus [KB 2267602]
    • Update for Windows Defender antimalware platform [KB 4052623]
    • Definition Update for Windows Defender Antivirus [KB 2267602]
    • Remove specific prevalent malware with Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool [KB 890830]
