Windows 10: Arbitrary JPEGS gradually appearing on desktop

At first I ignored these as the OS being over-helpful, wanting to remind me of you know Great Shots, like Google on Android showing pics from 1, 2, 5 years ago, or themed shots of sunsets, trees, etc. But just now tidying them up by deleting them, I've found they're not duplicates! So I had to restore them, go to the desktop folder at least the JPEGs have Properties attributes telling me what that folder is then park them somewhere before moving them back to where I think they came from.Is there some way to stop this happening? Thanks.

• Were there any recent hardware/software changes done on your computer prior to this happening?
• Does this error appear when opening other JPEG files or is the issue specific to a single JPEG file?
• Does this error appear when you try to open other file types?
• What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

trying to open jpeg file, message comes up "the object invoked has disconnected from its clients"

Hi

• the JPEG file was originally downloaded from a camera to the hard drive and are also stored on a USB disk - would appear to be a windows problem on our desktop since I can access the pictures from the USB on my laptop
  
• I am unable to open any jpg file on the desktop
  
• I have not taken any troubleshooting steps so far

My saved jpeg files are not showing on desktop, I did a r/c on an image, save as. desktop but not there
