Windows 10: Are Windows feature updates automatic?

Well when my computer was first upgraded to Windows 10 on June 13, 2016, it happened in the earlier hours of the morning (8AM-9AM ish) without my consent. Later that year it kept trying to download the Anniversary Update without my consent and always got stuck on a loading screen, forcing me to cold boot.
Now, this update (the Fall Creators Update) will break my display drivers, forcing me to live without Minecraft for the foreseeable future! As if that wasn't enough, when I rolled back my PC it started trying to upgrade again! Are these kinds of updates only installed manually? Or am I going to wake up one morning and find that my PC has been upgraded?

Feature updates are not appearing in my Windows Update

I have a laptop that is version 1511. I am constantly checking for updates in my settings but it seems that I am not receiving any updates concerning the version of my laptop. The latest version is 1703 and here I am stuck at version 1511, and can't even
upgrade to the Anniversary Update which is version 1607. What can I do to upgrade my laptop, when feature updates won't appear on my Windows Update? Help me please.

Use Media creation tool or the upgrade assistant to upgrade your system to the creators update.

Update to Windows 10 creators
update manually if you are unable to get it through Windows update
Method 3 is the best, but if you want a more automated process then you can use media creation tool.

 

You will only get upgraded overnight if you leave it powered on, and have not kept a watch on updates.
I manually check each day as first task. Then if it picks up updates, you can set it at a time to suit you. Once you have checked, it does not check until 24 hours have passed. I have never had a forced update.

People say it is a pain to check daily but it only takes a few seconds to start check and you can carry on doing other things in meantime. Think of it like cockpit drill in a car - check mirror, fule level etc.

 

I also check for Windows 10 updates manually every day when I start my system the first time. I also check a few times a day.
I check all my security programs manually several times a day.

I really don't like anything updating automatically.

What I am actually worried about is that after a certain number of days I might be upgraded as soon as I turn my back on the computer. Will this happen?
