  1. Assorted problems after Windows 10 upgrade

A friend gave me their notebook which appears to have some serious problems after upgrading to Windows 10, this is a Dell Inspiron N5050. The initial complaint was that after the upgrade the computer had a black screen, when I got it back to my office I tried plugging it into an external monitor and I could see the desktop, I checked the display settings and then rebooted removing the external monitor; this time the LCD screen worked and I got the Windows startup and login screen and after logging in I got the desktop. I checked a few things, installed Classic Shell and UltraVNC (so I could work on it from my desk) and decided to remove the old McAfee antivirus (which was expired anyway) and replace it with Eset; but when I uninstalled McAfee and rebooted I'm back to the exact same problem where the computer is working but the display is black, I see the Windows logo and spinning circle on boot but the screen goes black after that. Now I can get on by VNC but it seems like explorer is crashing and restarting and I mean it no sooner starts than it crashes i.e. the desktop wallpaper and taskbar disappear and then appears again, the mouse cursor is a constant spinning circle.

I'm able to run individual programs by opening the task manager (sending alt-ctrl-del and selecting task manager) and I've been able to install both Malwarebytes and ESet and I've scanned with both, Malwarebytes found some PUP's but no Malware and Eset didn't find anything. When I googled on this problem people seem to think it's a display driver problem, I went to Dell's website and using the service tag located the drivers for this computer and got the latest display driver available and but when I run it I get a message that a newer driver is already installed; I installed it anyway and I've still got the problem. This computer should have the Dell Update application but I can't locate or run it because it's apparently not called something obvious like "dellupdate.exe" and I've browsed through the Dell directories in Program Files and Program Files(x86) and I don't see anything. Also the generic Intel drivers for the onboard video won't install saying it's OEM and I need to get drivers from the manufacturer.

Btw I've also tried to get into safe mode by sending alt-ctrl-del and selecting restart while in VNC and then running over and holding down the shift key but upon reboot it just keeps starting normally.

Does anyone have any idea's how to fix this?

Also initially before this problem with explorer crashing started I noticed that when I tried to attach this computer to my wireless I was getting a message in the wireless tray app that the wireless was turned off; this model does not have an external wireless on/off switch but uses fn-F2 to turn the wireless on or off but no matter how many times you press it you can't get the wireless to turn on. This is rather strange although from what Google is telling me something plenty of people have experienced. Right now I just ran a long Ethernet cable from my switch to this notebook just to get internet but at some point I'm going top have to address this. Any ideas?

    :)

  2. Media Player no longer plays Mp4's

I have this same problem with playing mp4s and other assorted problems with the Windows Media Player after updating to Windows 10 on my previous HP Windows 8.1.

I have tried different codec suggestions and have messed with this for a week.

I think the Microsoft Windows company needs to come up with another update for this WINDOW 10 UPDATE Problem, so the customers don't have to go through this!

  3. problems with windows 10 and google chrome

since loading windows 10 i have seen a number of frustrating issues when using google chrome which i have never had before. The most frustrating of these (i have a touch screen laptop) is if i drag the cursor over the screen it resizes either larger or
smaller which is not what i want. Not a techie so whilst i have tried to fix it looking at other issues i have still not been successful - any ideas how i can fix this please?

  4. Assorted problems after Windows 10 upgrade

As far as the black screen problem goes, I believe I finally got that fixed by going into the bios and loading optimized defaults and rebooted.
