Windows 10: Asus external DVD reader stopped working after last Windows 10 update

My Asus external DVD reader SBC-06D2X-U stopped working right after the last Windows 10 update 1909.


I see the drive in Device Manager as well as File Manager, but when I insert a disk and try to read it, I get the message asking "Please insert a disk in drive".

When I right click on the drive and click on "Eject", I get a general error message, no error code, just saying "an error occured with the drive".


This is what I have tried so far:

- Update the DVD driver it was up to date.

- A few different CDs and DVDs.

- Powered off the PC, disconnected the device, uninstalled the device, powered up the PC, and reconnected the device.

- Connect the device in a different USB port.

- Connect the DVD reader to a Linux system to confirm it is still working it is working fine.

  Is the DVD drive not detecting DVD’s or is the drive itself not detected by Windows?
  

I suggest you to follow the methods below if the DVD drive is not detected and check.

Method 1: Run Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

Follow these steps to run Hardware and Devices troubleshooter:

• Press Windows key + X and click on Control Panel.
• Select Troubleshooting.
• Select View all on the top left corner.
• Click Hardware and Devices.
• Follow the on-screen instruction to run the troubleshooter.

Method 2: Uninstall and reinstall the driver

I suggest you to try uninstall the DVD drive drivers check if it works for you. Follow the steps to uninstall the DVD drive drivers:

• Press Windows Key + X key and click Device Manager.
• Right-click on the DVD drive listed and click on ‘Uninstall’.
• Select the option to Delete driver software.
• Restart the computer after its uninstalled.

Try to access the device manufacturer's website and download and install the latest chipset drivers.

External DVD reader/writer

After the last windows update, windows does not start any external DVD reader/writer, which always worked. Device manager gives code 19. Rolled back but problem persists. Drives work fine when connected to other desktop, laptop etc.

 

External DVD drive with Windows 10

I've been researching external DVD readers/writers and have come across a few comments indicating several readers/writers weren't compatible with Windows 10. I can't determine if this comment is a result of user error or whether or not these devices are
not compatible with Windows 10. Does Microsoft have a list of compatible devices or any advice on the matter?
