    ASUS X99A - 2nd Samsung Pro 950 M2 possible?

Installed a Samsung Pro 950 in the M2 slot on the X99A mobo - great speed.
Is it possible to install a second M2 drive in one of the remaining PCIe 3.0 x4 slots and get "full" speed?

    I have Windows 10 Insider build 11099 on C:\, 950 Pro, if I can install another M2 I'd use it for a non-Insider Win 10 install.

Can't update to 14332 either. Same error (0xc0000185).

Converted the esd file to an ISO and tried it that way. I got error code 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 - Install failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during the boot operation.

After some research, seems to be a lot of different reasons that one may get these errors, but a lot of them are due to drivers.

I'm thinking it may have to do with my Samsung 950 Pro NVME drive or add on card. I did a clean install of Windows 10 on the 950 Pro when I got it and everything went fine. I am on the fast ring and
upgraded to 14316 no problem. The 950 was installed on my motherboards M2 slot but it was only X2. So I added a SilverStone dual M2 to PCI-E X4 card and moved the 950 there. No issues. However, since
then I have not been able to upgrade.

36.04 seconds - I don't have boot screen disabled, have post time set higher than usual so I have plenty of time to press DELETE/F2/F8/whatever, this is by no means a true timing of the SSD.

ETA - just updated machine specs - new build this week

What do you mean by "full" speed? Are you using Samsung Magician software to activate RAPID Mode? I have an 850 EVO and I don't know if the software is the same for yours, but I do know that I was able to achieve pretty impressive speeds on my AMD platform, even though there are a few "issues" with the chipset compatibilities.

If you're referring to the RAPID mode speeds, then I think there is a limit of only one SSD using RAPID, at least with the 850s...

I have no clue whether installing on a PCIe slot will make it possible, versus SATA 6 like mine...

I'm not sure of my "cold boot" time, but I do know my "restart time" hovers around 50 seconds. Regardless, 36 seconds is great!

If you want to get the most out of your SSD, then I suggest you methodically benchmark it and make tweaks along the way...

Beware which benchmark you rely upon for testing. Typically, the Magician software benchmarks will demonstrate higher speeds than 3rd-Party benchmarks. I recently used CrystalDisk Mark on all of my drives and then performed various tweaks to achieve good, stable results.

Using 1-Thread v 8-Threads will make a significant difference as will enabling RAPID mode. Interestingly, the results from 8-Threads with RAPID enabled, produced 7745.063 MB/s Sequential Write speeds, which I doubt as I thought SATA 6 maxed out at 6000 MB/s. Regardless, I found the testing useful as a way to compare various settings in a consistent manner.

Here are the results from the EVO 850 using 8-Thread with RAPID, Single-Thread with RAPID and 8-Thread without RAPID:

I apologize if this is off-topic, but I thought you might find it interesting...

Also, reading your specs you appear to have built a beautiful rig! Nice!

@Doverboy - thanks for the compliment - I'm happy so far with the new toy.

I am curious if I can install a 2nd Samsung 950 Pro M2 in one of the PCI3 3.0 slots and have it operate at full capacity. I have been messing with the 2.5" SSDs for a while - this is my 1st experience with the M2 variety. Always use ATTO for bench marking, with the same program you're more apt to be comparing "apples to apples", so to speak. Samsung Magician is going to give favorable #s, their program, their drives...*Wink

I am not sure RAPID MODE is available for the Pro 950 - still fairly new to me - just checked - the 950 is NOT listed under RAPID mode - just the 850s. The 950 is giving me 2604224 read and 1567506 writes - any faster than that it would doing things before I even thought of them.

Whether you can add another PCI-E SSD depends on how many PCI-E lanes you're using, and the number your system supports.

Your I7-5820k supports 28 lanes. The I7-5930k and I7-5960X, 40 lanes. You could always drop another $573 (Newegg) for a 5930k and get those extra 12 lanes, if you need them.*Wink

A good SSD cold boot is around 10 seconds. If your boot time is a lot higher, then you have a problem.

"A good SSD cold boot is around 10 seconds. If your boot time is a lot higher, then you have a problem." - I suspect 36 seconds is his restart time...

Let us know if you decide to increase the lanes and go to HyperSpeed!

I don't know whether you'd need to do that to install a second PCI-E SSD. I'm not prepared to sit down with your manual and figure out whether competition for PCI-E resources would allow that with 28 lanes.

My guess is that you may be OK, as long as you are running only one graphics card.

    ASUS X99A - 2nd Samsung Pro 950 M2 possible?

I have just one graphic card - so that is OK. I'm going to have to do some more research on this, or just get a card and see what happens *Wink I know I'll need an adapter - brand new machine - lots of uncertainties.

Even the smallest PCI-e slot (x1) is fast enough to handle most SSDs. But the x4 can really handle all SSDs.
