  3. ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series Compatibility Issue with W.7 to 10 upgrade reservation

W.10 app for reservation upgrade says the "ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series" is NOT compatible for reserving an upgrade to W.10.

However, when I followed the search to solve the issue it took me thru an 8.1 upgrade compatibility search and that said the "ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series" WAS compatible.

How do I solve this apparent contradiction? Or what do I need to upgrade to be compatible for a W.10 upgrade?

Remove the Radeon card, upgrade on your integrated graphics chip. Once Windows 10 is back up, put your Radeon card back in. Windows 10 will probably install a generic driver for it. Use this procedure to get the legacy ATI driver working:

  5. Hi ,
Many thanks for your reply , I'm not entirely sure what that means but I will do some research and decide whether
I am competent enough to carry out the work myself.

Do you have an add-on video card or only the onbaord graphics chip built into the motherboard. I might have misunderstand your first post. I answered thinking you had an add-on video card. You can try the same procedure linked in my answer, though, if you only have the graphics chip on the motherboard, just try it in your existing Windows first and see if Windows 10 will allow the upgrade.

    Dear littlehunty ...

1.) Download the "RADEON 2100" Drivers for Windows 7 (x86 or x64) from MSI searching the K9A2GM V3 Motherboard
2.) Install that Driver manualy from the "Packages Folder"

The ATI/AMD Radeon Drivers, works fast and stable but you need 4Gb (2x2), PC2-6400 (800MHz) and Dualcore CPU (x2 or higher) in your Motherboard...

    Sincerely

    The 2100 graphics are integrated.

If they prevent the Windows 10 upgrade, the PC has a PCI-E X16 slot that could take a discrete graphics card. Whether adding one of those to a system from 2008 makes sense, I'll leave to the OP. (Looks like Geforce 610 cards start at around 30 GBP.)

    Dear bobkn...

Please excuse me for my persistence, but it is very often the case that older hardware does not work with the new operating systems even though there is actually no problem with the older hardware...

The hardware manufacturer rather see that you buy new hardware, as that older hardware still used ... This is the true reason why in your case (and millions of other cases) the graphics drivers can not be installed directly ...

Not because they do not work, but for business reasons ... I support this merciless crimes NOT ...

My ATI Radeon 2100 works very well under Windows 10... even under x32 also under x64... and there is no problema... *Wink

    Sincerely

I agree. Let me quote myself: "If they prevent the Windows 10 upgrade..."

I have no personal experience with this, but the Win 10 upgrade check through Windows Update is finicky about drivers. Upgrading from the ISO may proceed where the WU one won't, giving the Microsoft Basic graphics drivers.

Those generally work poorly compared to hardware-specific ones. In principle, 10 can use any WDDM drivers. (WDDM 1.0 were for Vista.) There's some chance for confusion there, as Windows 7 could use XDDM (XP) drivers. I don't know whether anyone packaged XP drivers as "Windows 7" drivers, but it would have been possible.

If the work-around that you suggested for the 2100 works, that's great. I had to do something similar with some chipset drivers for my 2008 Compaq notebook (AMD QL60 CPU, nVidia motherboard chipset, nVidia 8200m g graphics. Only the graphics device had fully blessed drivers for Win 10.)

    Hello bobkn...

In my case, there is 2x2Gb PC2-6400 Memory and an AMD Athlon x2 CPU with the >>>Radeon 2100<<< on board. I belive, that the most user, Works with Word and Excel and they don't need 3d Graphics at 100%...

I belive, that you are right what you say and probably there is some limitation in the WDDM 1.0...

...but for me, it Works every day with Windows 10-Enterprise x64 and Radeon 2100... (Working with Word 2016, Excel 2016, PowerPoint 2016 and Acrobat DC...

Thank you very much for yor response and have a nice Day... *Wink

    Sincerely

I have the same ATI Radeon 2100 video, and the upgrade tells me it won't work, and in fact it will not upgrade.
However, with the release of 10565 that can be activated with a windows 7/8 key on the same computer, I did a clean install of the ISO file (actually 10547 and then updated to 10565) and manually installed the Win8 driver from Download Drivers
and it works fine. So with the latest release of Windows 10 (insider preview at present) with the ability to use your Win7 or 8 key to activate, you can download the iso file and run the exe file from AMD to fix the graphics.

Or you can just download the Windows ISO from Microsoft Tech Bench site and use that to upgrade. Then install latest Windows 8 or 7 drivers for your card. No matter what Microsoft wants us to believe, as long as you can find at least Vista drivers for your devices, you can install Windows 10 on the machine. The only requirement is NX/PAE support in motherboard (anything Intel 775 or later and AMD AM2 or later). But this can also be patched if you want to try Windows 10 32-bit in a Pentium 4 PC...

Hi. I've had two PCs using 'old' nVidia cards that Win 10 said No to. I used the MS Win 10 ISO disc image and did the upgrade anyway. The new Win 10 used Basic drivers but after running the latest nVidia Win 8.1 driver all was fine. I suspect it will be the same with your Radeons as long as you download and save the latest Radeon driver and be preared to run it. Note that Win 10 didn't 'find' my grahics cards after install but the nVidia driver did so having a driver is essential.

I have said it in other threads, and I repeat it here. As long as there is at least a Vista driver (WDDM 1.0) for your graphics card, it can and will work in Windows 7 and 8 and 10 as well. Windows Update says there is no driver because it is searching only for Windows 10 drivers. If you download and install any earlier WDDM driver it should work without any issues.

In short, any nVidia Geforce FX 5200 or newer series card works. Any ATI Radeon 9200 or newer series works. Any Intel 945G or newer works. It doesn't need exclusively a Windows 10 driver. You can use Windows 8 or 7 or Vista driver (the newer the better).

Also a warning here for recent nVidia cards: nVidia changed a driver file in Forceware 340.xx and newer, so your old applications don't detect the CUDA capabilities of your card and you cannot use hardware acceleration depending on CUDA. If this is your case, use an earlier Windows 8.1 driver instead! I am using version 335.23 in Windows 10 for my GeForce 620 without any problem! So to take full advantage of your not-too-new nVidia card avoid Forceware version 340.xx or newer! You may miss some new features (if any) but is preferable than missing hardware acceleration in video editing and other applications! Manufacturers try tricks to force us upgrade our hardware, but we are often smarter than them. *Wink
