Windows 10: atikmdag.sys BSOD several times recently

So I got this BSOD on my Windows 10 machine a few days ago. It happened while I was watching a youtube video. The screen just went black(while the sound was still playing) and then a blue screen came with a big sad face -> : (

It gave me a: SYSTEM EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED
What failed: atikmdag.sys

So it eventually restarted the the computer and started repairing itself and eventually said it had to restore itself to an earlier state, and this took like hours, and at a point the computer said that it failed to restore and I just had to press a 'shut down' button. So I booted up the PC again and for some reason I was able to boot up win 10 again at what seemed to be an earlier restored state(which is really weird because the computer said that it failed to restore earlier).

So this happened several times over and over and I tried to find the root of the cause and it seemed to be some sort of graphics driver issue. I have a AMD 8750M graphics card and I've checked the latest graphics driver and it was up to date(amd-catalyst-15.7.1 which is from july 2015). But for some reason it kept nagging me about updating my driver to some Radeon Crimson driver ever since I installed win 10 early this year, and when I tried updating it just said that its recommended that I use my current driver(REALLY WEIRD!!).

Anyway, I eventually follow a recommendation of going into safe mode and then uninstalling my graphics driver and installing the Redeon Crimson one. But windows told me that it wasn't compatible for some reason so I reverted back to the "old" 15.7.1 driver, and it just kept giving me the blue stuff and "restoring" to an earlier state.

So, luckily I have win 8.1 installed on another partition and have been using it for the past 2 days without trouble. So I hardly think this is a hardware issue. This win10 BSOD issue came to me after I had an automatic update of win10 just a few days before, so that might have something to do with it. I installed windows 10 back in January this year and it has been working fine up until this point.

Today was the last time I tried booting up win10, it just BSOD' while loading startup software. So I couldn't even do log collecting. I don't really know what to do now.

Driver IRQL Not Less Or Equal

I finally had a BSOD with a message pointing to ATIKMDAG.SYS as the reason for the BSOD. I was able to locate a bundle of drivers from HP and extracted a new ATIKMDAG.SYS and installed it on my system. I have been stable ever since.

 

BSOD - atikmdag.sys & Crtitical Structure Error

I installed Win10. I installed a game which kept causing a BSOD with atikmdag.sys. I fixed the issue by copying the atikmdag.sys DLL from ATI to System32 drivers folder. The game launched after that.

However, now the computer keeps crashing with Critical Structure Error BSOD, and the solutions for them suggests upgrading driver for ATI which again takes me back to the first issue.

Actually, I did read it but for some reason the fact that you can't boot Windows 10 (you never said that, just inferred it) didn't sink in. About then I noticed you had not run the collection tool so I thought I would let you know what we needed.

Yes, I know you can't run it now since you can't boot to 10 and I'm sorry I wasted your precious time.

A simple I can't do that because I can't boot would have sufficed.

Could you tell us how you uninstalled the drivers and tried to install them?

FYI,

This is something best to not write, because we interpret it very offensive. We understand the problem you're dealing with, it is for many a main reason why they have started to troubleshoot BSODs properly, but please be careful with what you want to write.
I would want to ask you to think 'How would I interpret this if I were in his/her position?' before posting something, it'll help both sides because a friendlier post is answered earlier than a more offensive one *Smile
