Windows 10: Attachments opening in Word instead of downloading to PC

I use a Mac at work and a PC at home, so I use icloud.com on the infrequent occasion that I work from home. This means that I download documents from icloud.com, save them to my laptop, and open them in Word online. Recently the documents started opening in Word, rather than downloading, and I do not have an active version of Word installed on my device. I have not changed any settings - that I am aware of; is there a setting that may have changed, say, with a recent update, that will allow me to once again download documents instead of saving them? I use Chrome as my browser and have already tried changing those settings to no avail.

1. When I try to open Word documents sent as an email attachment, I get the message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions ..."

2. The same thing happens whether I open my email in Internet Explorer, Edge or Chrome.

3. My email client is comcast.net.

4. Not sure what you mean by "different account", but I just forwarded an email to a gmail address that I sometimes use and opened that email in Chrome. Trying to download and open the Word attachment I again get the same error message.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Opening Word attachments to emails with Microsoft 10

Since I upgraded to Windows 10 I cannot open Word documents attached to emails. I tried the suggestion of going to Control Panel, Office and doing an online repair, but the attachments still do not open. I am able to look at attachments to emails on my
Iphone, so I know there is no problems with the Word files being sent. This just started when I changed to Windows 10.

Any suggestions?

 

I am trying to email a word document to myself.

I would suggest you cancel everything open and start fresh using just these steps:

• Open your Mail app or website
• Click the New button and write a new email message with your address in the To line
• Click the Attachment paperclip button and select your Word file to attach
• Click Send
