Audio Broken on Dell Latitude E7240

Hello, I have a Dell Latitude E7240 upgraded to windows 10 and I am having problems with my audio. The audio does not play whether or not there are headphones connected to it. However, when I connect it to my HDMI for my TV, it does play sound through the TV. Does anyone know why the sound only works when connected to an HDMI port?

    What I have tried:
    -Restarting my computer
-Pressing "F12" on startup and running diagnostics
-Using Device manager to uninstall and reinstall drivers etc.
    -Using the sound troubleshooter
    -Downloading audio drives from support.dell.com
    -Using headphones
-turning the audio on and off through run->services
-making sure the speakers are not muted or disabled
-trying different settings in the manage audio devices tab

    :)

Are there know problems with Dell Latitude E7240 ? Problems updating to Win 10?

    Hello,

I have an opportunity to purchase Dell Latitude E7240 with i7-4600 with Windows 8 profesional. As For perfonmance it seems adequate, but it's rather old.

    Are there known problems?

Will there be a problem updating to Windows 10?

    Thank you,

    An

Have you recently updated any software which may have caused the problem? I assume you haven't muted the audio or turned the volume down to a low level?

Try running the audio diagnostics for your PC - there is a key you press (usually F12) on startup to do this. You can also run diagnstics from the Dell support site - see http://www.dell.com/support/article/...blems-?lang=en

It's also worth trying sfc /scannow from an admin command prompt or restoring your PC to an earlier time from backup

Thank you very much for the quick response! Unfortunately, I have tried both dell diagnostics and F12 diagnostics as stated above. I forgot to mention, it's a refurbished PC and therefore I don't have backups and I received it with windows 10. I have checked that it's not muted, and as stated above it works when I plug it into my TV with HDMI. I just tried the sfc /scannow, and "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations." was returned.

HDMI audio comes from a different source than the PC speaker/headphone sound. Thus it can work and not the regular PC sound like you have. I would suspect an internal connection as a start. I haven't looked at the service manual for your specific model but many Laptops have a small "daughter" board with the audio connections and some even the audio sound chip. These can be connected with a small cable to the motherboard. If yours has this, the connector would be my first point to look at (and even reseat the connector).

I tried accessing the Dell manuals for this "Ultrabook" but the site is having problems right now. Try later to see if you can access the service manual and how its actually configured.
