Audio distorted and is displayed as beyond 100% volume in Volume Mixer from W10 v1809 onwards

    Hi all,

Would appreciate any suggestions that you may have for my case:

I noticed that in some very rare cases, the audio from my laptop was disorted / ducking very momentarily. It is extremely intermittent and difficult to capture.

I also noticed that the volume in Volume Mixer displays as beyond 100% see attached

Audio distorted and is displayed as beyond 100% volume in Volume Mixer from W10 v1809 onwards ee9dfeea-6e35-440c-9355-7fdc58705599?upload=true.jpg

My laptop is a HP ENVY x360 15-cp0005au and is currently on the OEM image, currently updated up to W10 v1903.

See attached for the sound devices:

REV_1000 cut off at the end

I have done the following as troubleshooting:

The issue occurs regardless of if I use inbuilt speakers, headphones, or my docking staton. It is also independent of whatever program I use.

Disabled all enhacements and turned off the "Bang & Olufsen Experience". Programs cannot take exclusive control of the device.

Clean installed W10 to an external hard drive, played audio using the stock Windows drivers, performed all updates on MS Update and played audio a second time, then installed drivers from HP Support Assistant and played audio a third time. I found that the issue does not occur on W10 v1709 and 1803, but occurs on 1809, 1903 and 1909.

Worked with HP Support and completed the following:

    Have done the following updates:
    BIOS
    Audio driver

When in safe mode, it does not detect the laptop's internal speakers, but detects the docking station. It works properly in safe mode

Performed BIOS diagnostics and they ran successfully.

HP Support is not willing to provide any further support unless I perform a HP Cloud Recovery, which requires a 32GB USB. Unfortunately I don't have access to a 32GB USB.

    :)

  2. volume mixer in taskbar in WIndows 10

    Hi Caroline,

The requirement of pinning Volume mixer to the taskbar is currently not available in Windows 10. However, you can view Volume mixer from the volume control icon located in the system tray.

Before we assist further, I would like to ask you a few questions:

    • Are you not able to see volume icon or the volume mixer on the computer?

    • If volume icon, have you enabled the option to show in the system tray?

If you want to view Volume mixer on the PC and have enabled volume icon on the system tray, follow the steps below and check if the issue is resolved.

    • Right click on the volume icon and select
      Open Volume Mixer
      from the context menu.

    • Check if the window is accessible on the computer.

Note: The option to pin Volume mixer to the taskbar is not currently available on the computer.

Write to us with the status of pinning Volume mixer on taskbar in the same post for further assistance. Your reply is most important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.

Xbox Game Bar doesn't show the volume mixer

    EDIT:

    • Edit 1: still no actual answer for a way to fix this. But I just factory reset my PC, the volume mixer works perfectly now. I know this is not the answer you wanted, but it's all we have
Before I go into details do not suggest:

    • Fixing my audio driver by updating/removing it
    • Resetting the Xbox Game Bar app
    • Doing the 'sfc /scannow 'command
    • Telling me to use the volume mixer built into windows
    • Referring me to the Xbox Game Bar app troubleshooting page

OK, now that we go that out of the way. I have had this problem for about 3 weeks. The issue is that the Xbox Game Bar doesn't display the volume mixer correctly, it only shows the main audio driver's volume mixer and nothing else (no app volume mixer like:
CS:GO, Microsoft Edge Beta, Spotify etc.).

    Photo for reference:

For the Microsoft employees reading this, this is a persistent issue in Windows. I will list other posts on this forum with the same issue to show the scale of the issue. All of these posts have not been solved so far:

Set new audio device default for volume mixer in Windows 10

    I use two audio devices:

    • Default (audio) device "Realtec Digital Output (Optical)"
    • Default communication device "Lautsprecher (Speaker)"

    My goal:
I want to have the default audio volume on my default communication device, instead of the default device - at all times.

    What I tried so far:
Changing the volume mixer to my communication device explicitly works temporary, but as soon as I close the settings window, the default audio volume is reset again to the default audio device.

Step 1: Clicking on volume shows me the default device:

Step 2: Changing the volume mixer to my communication device manually:

Step 3: Clicking again on volume does not keep the change Audio distorted and is displayed as beyond 100% volume in Volume Mixer from W10 v1809 onwards :(

How can I make it permanent that windows uses my communication device for default volume control?
