  1. Audio enhancements / Room Correction screw up headset sound despite being deactivated

I am using a headset for meetings. Recently I got a new laptop (Win 10 as before, but it seems newer and fancier) and as I was using my headset on this one, the sound was totally weird - lots of reverb, as if everyone was standing in a large cave.

Troubleshooting directed me to the enhancements tab in the "Additional device properties" window for my headset. This is where it gets weird.

    • None of the audio enhancements are enabled.
    • Clicking on "Disable all enhancements" nevertheless solves the problem, however.
    • Trying to enable Room Correction opens a window for calibrating the Room Correction feature, at which point the reverb also stops.

It seems as if the "Room Correction" enhancement is responsible. However, I cannot deactivate it (it's already deactivated) and I also cannot activate it because... It's a headset. The microphone cannot hear the test sounds that the Room Correction calibration makes because the volume is too low.

I could just use the "Deactivate all enhancements" check and be done with it. But that is really unsatisfactory, especially since I might actually want to use the other enhancements at some point. I'm in a situation where a feature is activated despite being listed as deactivated and despite not even being calibrated for use, and it's doing something really weird and it never happened before despite having used this headset on multiple Win 10 computers.

Does anyone have a solution for this? I find it quite frustrating and couldn't find anything about it online. I really also want to know what the heck is going on there.

    Good surround sound headset

I know you say you're not that guy, but stepping into the $250+ range really brings a change in build quality that might have you never having to buy another set. Otherwise, getting 6 speakers with decent sound in a headset is hard, and that's what you are asking for, and I have no suggestions, but just a bump up the list. *Stick Out Tongue Audio enhancements / Room Correction screw up headset sound despite being deactivated :p

    Sound Quality

One thing that sticks out from looking at your "My Computer" specs. You list "ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)" which suggests you do not have the correct sound hardware driver. Your motherboard has Realtek sound and the first step is to install the Realtek sound drivers. My ASUS also came with Sonic Studio 2 which is a sound enhancement package. Check the ASUS install disc to see if you have something similar.

May not be a speaker problem.

    Audio Enhancements

    Hi Charlotte,

One step that we could try is to manually re-install the Audio Enhancement, and see if it helps. First, go to HP's website and download the latest Audio Enhancement installer (IDT) and save it to your Downloads folder. Once done, follow the remaining steps
    below:

    • Search for Control Panel via Cortana search and hit the
      Enter
      key.
    • Open the Device Manager and click Sound, Video and Game controllers.
    • Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall.
    • Restart your PC.
    • Once your PC restarts, it should automatically load all audio driver. Let it complete the process.
    • Go to the Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select
      Run as administrator
      .
Once complete, check if you have the enhancements back and let us know the outcome.
