Windows 10: Audio jack stopped working after latest update

The latest update the one that introduces a new version of edge and that was forced on me against my will on 26 August 2020 has stopped my audio jack from functioning correctly. The audio jack can no longer recognise devices headphones, headsets, speakers, microphones, etc. that are plugged in. Only built-in speakers work and only built-in speakers appear in sound settings.


The only exception is if device is plugged in while restarting system. Then speakers, headphones, etc. will work as long as I don't unplug them. Once I unplug the device, however, audio jack will cease working. That is, if I unplug the device and then plug it back, it is not recognised.


This happened after the last update as well, but it was fixed after deleting the Realtek driver and then updating it after reboot. This fix doesn't work after the latest update.


I am using a Dell XPS 7390.


I use a headset for work and frequently plug and unplug devices. Having to re-start the computer every time I switch devices is unacceptable. Stop "fixing" things when they're not broken!!

The audio jacks stopped working and it is not a hardware problem.

1. Multiple headsets do not get audio output from both of the audio jacks on the computer and the headsets are confirmed to be working, so it's the computer's problem.
2. The audio output through a DisplayPort monitor's audio jack and monitors' speakers still work, so the computer can still produce audio. The monitor's audio jack is not an option.
3. Both audio jacks stopped working at the same time despite only one being in use, so it's not hardware.

What is the problem and what is the solution?

Hi Calvin,

Please go to the settings app on your PC and click update and security. Click Troubleshooting, and find the one that says "Playing Audio". It should detect the problem.
