Windows 10: Audio problems - No more audio drivers

Hi everyone,
I seem to have ran into some audio issues recently that my sound disappeared after extensive use of my laptop.
I tried fixing these issues, but I only made it worse I'm afraid... So i tried uninstalling my audio drivers but they didn't automatically reinstall like one of the forums said they would.

So now I have a laptop with no sound at all basically, and I've tried doing a system restore, but it seems to not be able to do it, it boots up normally again and says it wasn't successful at completing it.

So this is how my device manager looks like right now.





Could anyone with your expertise guide me through this problem?

Extending the screen with project doesn't switch audio device automatically after creators update.

It's not an audio driver issue.

The upgrade also reinstalled my audio driver with the latest driver, and the audio is working fine.

The problem is that the "project" option doesn't bring back the default audio device automatically when the HDMI audio is no longer available, like it used to.

I did my audio drivers wasn't the problem it was my lan drivers, uninstalled them then reinstalled them no more problem

 

Hello, start with a couple of routine basic checks that have been around for many years as part of Windows maintenance:

From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed.
Post back the result, which will be on the screen briefly.
Otherwise you can get the result as follows:

Then from the same command prompt run
sfc /scannow <press return>

and post the result.

I don't know what has happened to your laptop (history) or what repairs you may have attempted.
You need the first to pass, else there's a problem with your file system.
If the second fails, there are more standard options.

Note: at this stage we're not attempting to fix your drivers, merely establish a sound base from which to work.

Welcome aboard, Louis.

It sounds like you uninstalled your sound card driver. Try going to your sound card in Hardware Manager and let Windows choose a driver for you to install.

Yes that is indeed the case, but this is what I get when i try updating the driver software:

 

The problem is deeper than a simple driver issue. Could be a permissions problem. Also maybe Windows Update isn't working.. don't know yet. So let's ask..
What happens if you run Windows Update manually?

First, do you have the results of chkdsk? (See link in my 1st post)
Second, do you have a C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.LOG file?

You can try running SFC /SCANNOW from an admin level command prompt in Safe Mode.

Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (admin)

as for the SFC /SCANNOW, it seems to have no luck, and says exactly the same as the image I posted above.

Hi, Chkdsk seems to have fixed things but SFC /SCANNOW failed rather badly.

Suggest you head straight for an in-place upgrade repair install: my notes here:
An In-place upgrade repair install will fix many things, but not those where the settings are not changed by the procedure.

For this you need an installation medium with the same base build as you have installed.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

This will refresh Windows, after the manner of a Windows installation.
- all/most associations will be unchanged
- all your programs will be left installed
- you will lose any custom fonts
- you will lose any customised system icons
- you may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection
- you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install
- Windows.old will be created
- system restore will be turned off- you should turn it on again and I recommend you manually schedule a daily restore point.
- you will need to redo any language downloads including the display language if you changed that)
- inactive title bar colouring (if used) will be reset to default
- if Qttabbar is installed, you need to re-enable it in explorer (Options, check Qttabbar)
This is one of the better features of Win10: as each major build comes out, that's your updated reference build, and as updates are mostly cumulative, there will be few to do.

Recommendation:
Before you perform this major repair procedure, do create a disk image.

Please consider using disk imaging regularly. It's a brilliant way to
- preserve your system (and your sanity)
- back up your data
- restore your system to a previously working state in a relatively short time

Recommended: Macrium Reflect (free/commercial) + boot disk/device + large enough external storage medium.

 

Thanks Dalchina, I will keep post another update in 3 weeks on how it went, since I can't afford risking not having my laptop for a few days since I am in my exam period. Thank you for going through all the trouble of researching it. it will be the first thing I do once the exams are over.
