Windows 10: Audio stops working when passed through surround receiver

I have my computer hooked up to my home theatre (Pioneer VSX-524-K & Optoma GT 1080Darbee & 5.1 speakers) via HDMI out of my GeForce GTX 1650 4GB.

When I connect the computer directly to the projector, I get video and audio (the projector itself has a speaker), but when I connect my receiver between them, I get only video. In other words,

Windows + HDMI + Projector = picture + sound

Windows + HDMI + Receiver + HDMI + Projector = picture - sound

The receiver successfully passes surround sound received from my Blu-Ray player.

Is there a setting somewhere in Windows 10 I need to tweak to get the audio to go through the receiver?

No bass in surround


Okay I will mark this as solved as I have fixed my issue. Here is what I did:

• After trying all the common suggestions about drivers and such, I had no luck
• On a whim, I bought a sound card and hooked it up via the optical cable.
• I also changed the speaker settings on my receiver from Large to Small.
• I removed all sound drivers other than those for my sound card (Soundblaster ZX)

I now have bass in surorund sound. I also have it set to 5.1 in Windows and have checked all speakers with a surround sound audio file I downloaded.

My guess is that the driver coming off of the Nvidia card is only in 2.1 and it just can't decode/send the right sounds to the receiver over HDMI.

At any rate, hopefully this will help someone else.

 

5.1 surround sound

Just upgraded to latest Windows 10. Surround sound is not on audio channel menu. Only "stereo" is listed. Surround sound is also now not working on ONKYO receiver. Windows says I have latest sound driver.

All other help messages talk about realtek. I just have what came with Dell computer.
