Windows 10: Auto disable touchpad when usb mouse connected issue. No auto disable tick box in settings.

My Windows 10 Laptop used to automatically disable the touchpad when I connected a USB mouse. This has stopped working after a windows update & the tick box to disable the touchpad has disappeared from settings.

Disable Touchpad and use External mouse

I understand that you want to disable the TouchPad of your laptop and want to use an external USB mouse.

To use an external USB mouse, please connect the USB mouse to any USB port on your laptop and it will be set up automatically.

To disable the touchpad you can try the following steps and check if that helps:

1. Press and hold Windows + X key on the keyboard.
   
2. Select Device manager from the list.
   
3. Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
   
4. Find Synaptics SMBus TouchPad/ELANClickpad touchpad.
   
5. Right click on the driver and select Disable.

Hi James,

Touchpad is usually disabled and re-enabled by pressing the Fn and either
F3 or F9 keys, but that depends on the laptop that you have. Each brand have its own shortcut keys. However, you can disable the touchpad from the Settings page. Follow these steps:

1. Open Settings > Devices.
2. In the left pane, click Touchpad.
3. To completely disable the touchpad, toggle off Touchpad.
4. If you only want to disable the touchpad when an external mouse is connected, check the box for
   Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected option.

How to disable my Touchpad on my HP Elitebook 2550 with WIN 10Pro

Hi Bob,

In Windows 10, you may disable the touch pad by following the steps below:

• Right-Click on the Start button.
• Choose Control Panel and click on Hardware and Sound then select
  Mouse.
• Under Mouse Properties, choose Click Pad Settings then put a tick on
  Option to Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached.
• Click on OK and see if it is working.

If the above steps are not applicable, you may opt to choose the hereunder steps provided:

• In the Windows Search box, type TouchPad then choose
  TouchPad settings.
• Click on Additional settings.
• To disable the Touchpad when using a USB mouse, check Disable external pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached.

Note: To determine if the icon for the Touchpad is displayed in the taskbar, and if it is, how it appears, make the appropriate selection under Tray Icon.
