Windows 10: Auto Repair loop

I was trying to help a neighbor with his computer. He forgot his startup password. After several guesses his computer went into the auto repair loop. I did all the tests and everything passed. I did a chkdsk. Nothing worked. I don't have a boot disc or thumb drive. What can I do?

Auto Repair loop

Hi Windows geniuses! I've reached the end of my knowledge base, so now turning to you all for help.

My daughter's PC was off the other day. Unsure if it was turned off, or if there was a power outage.

Upon turning it back on she found it was struck in an auto repair loop. I had a look and none of the auto options work. I turned off the auto repair function and on booting get a 0xc00000f error.

I chased my tail for a while trying to work out why the EFI partition was missing. Turns out there is none because it's an MBR disk (not sure why....).

In Diskpart I can see there's 2 partitions. The main partition and a 579Mb System Reserve partition.

The main partition still has all the data on it. Although I couldn't pull the Windows product key off using ProduKey.

Bootrec /fixmbr seems to complete successfully.

Bootrec /fixboot gives me an "Access denied" error.

I'm now at the end of my knowledge. I found a few suggestions to fix it but they all seem to be in relation to GPT disks.

Any suggestions?

 

Stuck in auto repair loop

If the screen is stuck for a long time on auto repair, I suggest you to restart the computer using power button and check. If the issue still persist, I suggest you to check if you are able to boot the computer into Safe Mode environment and check.

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:

• 
  Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
  
• 
  Select an option to “Safe mode with networking” using the arrow keys on the keyboard when the Windows Advanced Options menu
  appears, and then press ENTER.

I've given up at this stage. I'll just do a fresh install and try and get as much of her data off the old drive as possible. It's a shame I couldn't get to the bottom of it.
