Windows 10: Auto update Windows Defender definitions on metered connections

Windows Update packages are around 1GB so I used regedit to automatically set all internet connections as metered since I'm on a budget cellular plan but I want Windows Defender to download definition updates as soon as they're available regardless if I'm on a metered connection. When metered connection is enabled, I always get the "Out of date protection definitions". Clicking update everytime causes the settings app to crash SFC and DISM can't even fix this issue since Windows 10 but it does update when left alone. Is there a way to allow Windows Defender to auto update without user prompt

Hi, is there any way for Windows Defender to automatically update its definitions on a metered connection?

 

Task to auto update windows defender definitions disappears

My mom has a new laptop with windows 8.1, we always set the windows updates to manual.
On our other windows 8.1 computers I have created a task for auto updating windows defender definitions, which works fine for us.

This is how I created this task:

"Click on "Create Task", name it what you like (mine is Daily Signature Update), set the trigger as the time you want it to run every day.

For Action browse to Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe and select it. In "Add arguments" add -SignatureUpdate -MMPC"

But somehow this task disappears once it has run on my mom's laptop.
I'm logged in as admin and then I also tried it with running the task scheduler as admin, the task just disappears every day for some reason, while it works fine on our other windows 8.1 computers.

Anyone an idea why this task disappears every time?

Stopping auto updates on metered connection windows 10 home


Greetings all.

I have a small metered connection. It's only 1 GB per month. And I can't delay the auto updates until I'm at a public connection.

My computer sneaks, and downloads the auto updates without me knowing it . And if I do know it, I can't stop them so I can wait until I get to a public connection without disconnecting from the internet.

It's mostly Windows Defender updates. Sometimes there are two or three a day.

The auto updates alone use up more than my monthly data allotment.

I've tried

Settings/network and internet/advanced options

and all I get from that is a page listing the properties like Manufacturer, and Description.

What I want to do is postpone or stop the auto updates until I'm at a public connection so I don't have to use my private, metered connection to download the updates.

HELP!
