Windows 10: automatic installation of updates through win update settings

when does this work automatically? see the image below. i have downloaded everything available, however after a restart, this screen remains the same. why? can I specify downloads whenever I want, but am subject to windows only installing them during my "non active hours" I have specified in the CP and settings? I should be getting a notif in the sys tray that the machine needs to restart to install the updates. i have no changed my active hours to run a test to see if I get the notif like I should be getting. I am not. can someone tell me how this is supposed to work? so I know what to expect? thanks.

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Properties.

3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Properties.

6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.

7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

Automatic Updates

They are installed automatically if that is the way you have Automatic Updates set.

I have AU set as download them, but let me choose when to install.

Is that what you meant when you said they are installed automatically?


As to your question Lillebror, I searched for a way to start the Automatic Updates, but really wasn't successful.
