  2. System Locale, "Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support" several imcompatibilities

This beta option turned itself on after a Windows update. Outlook 2019 suddenly began corrupting Japanese characters when importing contacts from .csv files and Import/Export is greyed out unless menus are set to English. Apparently Outlook 2019 still doesn't support UTF-8 for Asian language characters, and Japanese needs to be in SHIFT-JIS (ANSI). This beta option forces it to use UTF-8, which it can't, and exports coded in UTF-8 then cannot be read back in again. Also, it is impossible to convert a UTF-8 encoded file to ANSI in Notepad anymore -- the option is still there but it doesn't work. I also had to manually change the font of the Command Prompt to a Japanese font or characters are garbled there. Excel misformats tables when opening csv files from the Data tab.

Finally found this box, unchecked it, and all symptoms disappeared. It was all that one setting - changing other Regional/Language settings had no effect, There are too many components of Office and Windows that need updating to get rid of ANSI/SHIFT-JIS. I really hope Microsoft will make this work properly before making it the default or declaring it out of beta. I spend 4 hours on chat/remote access with MS support and they couldn't identify the issue. It took days of searching before I found the culprit. Unfortunately I lost the support ticket number so I can't report the solution.

I would assume this affects other languages as well, but this option is really best left unchecked now.

  3. Unicode Symbols/ Greek Letters in Filename -UTF-8 Language settings

    Hi Microsoft community,

I'm working on a project to integrate some international users (Greek) into our existing services. I'm looking for more information/suggestions about the "Use UTF-8 for worldwide language support." option within Windows 10.

This option is found under Control Panel -> Change time, date or Number formats -> Region -> Change System locale

We have deployed laptops to them that have been appropriately localised to display in Greek with the correct keyboard setup.

I'm having an issue with File names shared by external Greek businesses. The files are displaying incorrectly within File Explorer, Onedrive and SPO.

This only happens when "Use UTF-8 for worldwide language support" is enabled.

With this setting disabled, the filenames display correctly in Greek. Unfortunately, two of their business apps require UTF-8 to be enabled; otherwise, the text layers have a similar issue where they do not display the correct characters.

I understand Unicode vs UTF most likely causes this. Is there anything I can do to administrate around this for them or apply UTF-8 to specific applications?

    Many Thanks

    Sam

Automatic repair screen after enabling beta UTF-8 option in Region...

    laptop doesnt boot automatically

    This is what happened.

    1. Did a repair install and later disabled hibertnate in CMD.
    2. Enabled legacy option ROM in BIOS.
    3. After a few times startup ( i used the system in such mode for 5 days), changed boot option back to default.
    4. Vola!! It boots automatically to win10 without any keypress. Tested it with many starts to confirm the same.
    5. Re-enabled hibernate option using CMD and later selected Fast Startup.
    6. System booted normally, without the need for any keypress.

I do not know exactly whether such steps resolved the problem or what else happened, hence cannot suggest above steps.

Many thanks to all members who helped to troubleshoot problems.
