The Automatic Windows10 update today has defaulted all/most text to symbol font – please help!!

A clean install deleting all partitions and creating 2 partitions at 400Gb & 350Gb was done on 12/7/2020, and the computer has been working 100% fine until the updates of today.

The screen is full of Wingding-type symbols so I understand hardly anything on the screen. However, I have amazingly managed to access the computer via a network connection from another laptop and so was able to collect a screenprint as below.

Q1. What has happened?

Q2. Is there a way of fixing this easily or must I clean reinstall everything again?

Q3. What if somehow I can uninstall the updates of today? Would that be a good move?

Q4. I was planning to make a system image with everything clean installed including applications, settings, bookmarks, etc.: has this problem now perhaps corrupted my installation? Is it still wise to keep this as a clean install system image?


Today’s updates included the new Microsoft Edge. Though I didn’t even use MS Edge, maybe this is related to this problem.

A simple solution but one that works in most circumstances!

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Properties.

3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Properties.

6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.

7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.
