Windows 10: AV Comparitives Updated

Discus and support AV Comparitives Updated in AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security to solve the problem; jimbo I do the same, I either use MSE for Win7 or WD for Win8.1 & 10(with Malwarebytes Anti Exploit). But I created a thread in Eight forums and posted... Discussion in 'AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security' started by Cliff S, Jul 17, 2015.

    Hi there

I agree about choice -- however it's always best I hope to give people decent information so they can hopefully make a sensible decision.

However some people unfortunately will never do the sensible thing -- I saw on SKY NEWS this morning (a UK Satellite channel) a horrifying statistic -- 17% of drivers under 35 are using Smart phones while driving to take SELFIES -- incredibly dangerous --much more dangerous in fact than Drunk Driving !!!! -- so it just goes to show.

(If you did that in parts of Iceland you'd be DEAD as you'd end up in a Ravine or worse before you even knew it !!!!).

    Cheers

Sorry to disagree with you Jimbo regarding your anti-virus viewpoint.
As for Defender, do read my post "Edge Hijacking" where even with the aforesaid Windows Defender and Mbam plus Mbam anti exploit installed failed to protect my computer.
Having used the above since Oct last year without any problems, I have now decided they do not offer enough protection, and have installed Avira Free.

On all the machines relatives have had and used over the years while employing "defender" every one of them has been infected numerous times but after installing third party AV not one has been infected yet .

Thats proof enough to me and the machines work fast and efficiently , bottom line , use whatever you want but please spare me lectures about the uselessness of anything other than what Windows provides.

Why doesn't anyone ever test stuff like webroot secure? I am actually impressed by its abilities and insanely small footprint both in installed size and in resource usage

I went to their page and the so called awards and certifications a pure Bull S4!t. They are not clickable to any link(only real ones are) That usually means they just copy & pasted there. Real one will be linked to the reviewer or awarder. Right there it tells me not to trust them!

  10. Bitdefender, Panda and Baidu are cloud AVs. Maybe they have tested it, but if the vendor is unsatisfied with the results, he can demand to be excluded from a chart and it is not really popular AV, not even listed on VirusTotal - Free Online Virus, Malware and URL Scanner which uses 56 different AVs. Besides AV, which promotes itself based on the speed instead of virus detection does not look very trustworthy. 4MB RAM usage? Even GUI uses more than that, I smell a fake AV or a stinky advertising like Iobit does. *Rolleyes

  11. This is the first time I've looked at an Antivirus comparison chart in a few years. Interestingly, it doesn't show Microsoft Security Essentials, or Windows Defender. The charts used to always show MSSE / WD, and point out how bad they were compared to 3rd party AV's.

The fact that Microsoft's MSSE & WD are missing from the latest chart indicates to me that they're now really great..perhaps even better than the for-profit antiviruses. And, reading the WD kudos in this thread further convinced me to get rid of Avast, and just go with the improved protection afforded by Windows Defender. If I'm reading correctly, Windows Defender on Windows10 now functions more like Microsoft Security Essentials?

I see in the Win10 settings that WD now uses cloud-based realtime protection. That's awesome! This is the only Windows10 feature where I gladly toggled all the "Help Us" and "Share with us" switches to "On". *Wink

Thanks to everyone for your helpful feedback re: MSSE and WD.

@AllenChicago the dotted white line that goes across the upper quarter of the chart is Windows Defender/MSE(Same AV basically)

Was looking for an msg area like this, and bang, here is one. lol.
Ok most likely some folks won't believe me on this, that's ok, that's what makes this forum great and fun to be on. So lets start.

I recently bought a new computer, its used but new to me. Its 1 year old HP Envy Phoenix. It came originally installed with Windows 8.1, then the owner upgraded it to Windows 10 home. Eckkkk. After I received this computer, I upgraded it to Pro immediately, I already bought a key for the upgrade. Then after it upgrade itself, and activated. I let it run for a day, didn't change much, then next day did a Clean install, removed everything that was on this computer. Re-installed Windows Pro, let it make the partitions, etc. Booted up and Now windows pro was running and activated just fine. I do not like Windows defender, or windows firewall, never have and never will, its just sucks. But, I let windows run using what windows installed for another 4 days. Didn't make hardly any changes to anything. Only programs installed were ones that Windows installed during the clean install. I installed only 3 or 4 programs that I've always run. CCleaner, Everything, (great search tool) My RoboForm, keeps all my passwords. and that was about it, was not going to install the rest of my apps till later. 1st thing I was noticing was how slow some of windows apps would run, ccleaner would even take a little longer. Computer was sluggish to say the least. This computer screams, when its not being bogged down. Looked at all kinds of things to try and find out what was causing this computer to act like this. Finally I had enough of windows firewall, and defender. was time to install MY AV programs that I have bought and own. One of them has a lifetime license too. 1st one I installed was the firewall I like to run, also bought and registered. This is after 5 days of letting Windows run with default app that windows installed. I installed my Nortons 1st. YUP Norton 360 Premier edition. Installing nortons immediately shuts downs windows firewall. Yay!!!!!! Next I installed my Malwarebytes registered version. Within a very short time, maybe 1st or 2nd reboot, my windows 10 Pro got all her speed back!!!! Everything just snapped when clicking on any app!! Boot time takes anywhere between 24 secs to 26 sec's restart times. Cold boot might take 26 to 28 secs. Seems what was slowing this computer down was windows default AV and firewall. Also on my old computer that was upgraded to win 10 pro, but never did a clean install on that one, I would have problems with getting windows updates, and store apps. That was related to Nortons, cause nortons was installed and running when I upgrade to win 10. Windows didn't like that. lol . This was the MAIN reason I waited 4 or 5 days, and let windows run its default apps. Wanted to let windows run and do an update or two, before I got rid of the lousy firewall and AV it comes with. Since then I have installed most of my registered apps, no slowdown on this computer what-so-ever!!!! Computer runs fast, no problems with windows update, no problems with store updates, don't have to turn nortons av protection off, before updating, Everything works and runs just fine. Lots of people have put down nortons, saying its a resource hog, and is bloated, I find that statement quite false. If you install your programs correctly, clean install, re-install your personal apps Windows seems to have no problems, running different brands of firewalls and AV programs. But This Windows 10 that we all are running can be VERY picky how we install her, its still a young OS and I'm sure this will change down the road.

Right now this computer screams, Windows 10 has not given me one problem doing everyday tasks, nothing...... sleeps fine, wakes up fine, updates fine, programs installed run fine. But I still believe that windows firewall and defender slowed THIS computer down quite a bit, even affected some apps like CCleaner. I know it for a fact on THIS computer!! I may not have convinced anyone on here about what I am posting, that's ok, I know from seeing the change on this computer its a fact. Plus the way I went about installing Windows this time. Sorry for the real long post, most won't read this whole post, just small parts. lol. Just had to write my experience doing a clean install and the after effects. Take Care....out....

@OldMike65 I read it. So in short what you're telling folks is:

    • Upgrade 1st(of course*Smile).
    • Give it a day or two to settle in and update and sync itself.
    • Do a clean install and give a few days to a week to really settle in, and install only the very minimum on 3rd party programs.
    • Then, and only then, install their 3rd party AV soft ware and firewalls.
