Quarantine, then check it out for yourself, then decide if you want to get rid of it or not.

Remember, not everything is bad just because windows or some program says it is *Wink

As you`ve said, if the user is diligent and uses a little common sense, chances are, they will never have an issue.

  3. Earlier this afternoon, I was browsing Ebay when I had a popup from Adobe, saying Flash Player needed an update.
I ok'd that and received an onslaught of pups and malware, BubbleDock, PC Optimizer, 2 media players, 3 toolbars, defrag tools, cleaners etc.
    Unbelievable amount of stuff!
I ran SuperAntiSpyware, and it identified hundreds of items (last scan 6 days ago). When I tried to remove the threats, the progress bar stuck. After a while I did a hard reboot, and SAS was still running. Had to shut it with task manager.
I then ran MalwareBytes, and that worked fine, and removed a couple of hundred items.
I've now tried SuperAntiSpyware again, and it has scanned, found threats, and removed them ok.

Never experienced anything like that before, It's taken a couple of hours to sort out.

  5. Because I'm not all that smart I use a layered method on my computers.
    On W-10 I use Defender
    Malwarebytes Premium
    On demand SAS
Malwarebytes just today or yesterday found a couple of PUP's that sneaked in. I don't know from where because I didn't download anything.
I'm not one of them that is smarter than all the bad guys that create all the bad stuff so I do use more programs when needed.
I like and use Eset Online scan and AdwCleaner also just to make me happy. Every now and then Eset scan will find a PUP everything else have missed. A PUP to me is a infection because I didn't ask for it.

I seldom get anything except a few tracking cookies and PUP's now and again.
I do quick scans often and complete scans about every 3 or 4 days. Their not hard to do and it cost nothing to scan.
One can do what One wants to do on their computers but a pea brain like me needs the help of security programs.
If for no other reason but make me happy.

Never under estimate the bad guys. They are very clever and their are lots of them.

If one would read the Security post that A Guy post I think the readers will get a good idea of what the bad guys can and are doing.

Be aware that a lot of people who used third party anti-virus had problems running any anti-virus after the upgrade to build 9860. Even the native Windows Defender was broken and unusable.

Since Win 10 is still a work-in-progress, there will be more updates (or probably new builds) to come and this anti-virus issue may continue to happen. If you can help it, stay away from 3rd party anti-virus for now or make sure that you uninstall it first before updating/upgrading your Win 10.

Until Windows 10 goes final I'm going to use Windows Defender. When Windows 10 is officially released I'll decide if I want to stay with Defender or go with Eset Smart Security. So far Microsoft is doing a good job of keeping Defender updated.

That's because I think MS is manipulating defender so they can access our W10 computers. But it doesn't matter. I don't use W10 for sensitive tasks.

Windows TP is definitely not the OS to use for personal or sensitive info.

Windows TP is definitely not the OS to use for personal or sensitive info. Hi there

Not wishing to get into the realms of whether W10 is safe enough to use on personal computers yet I fail to see how ANY AV program can protect you against yourself giving your personal data away freely - for example even signing up to a Ms account you've passed data on to the net by a perfectly legitimate request -- How does an AV program distinguish between a "legitimate" request and a "rogue" one.

What is "Malware" - if you think that Malware is simply stopping annoying programs for example chucking up popups then you will be disappointed - A lot of these programs -- irritating in the extreme that they are are working totally within the standard Windows operating environment just like any other "behaved" application program -- so how does a "malware" preventer stop it -- Of course it Can't but the companies who supply these products prey on people's lack of knowledge and get them to install stuff that has NO EARTHLY MERIT WHATSOEVER.

As I've often re-iterated in these Formus that as far as HOME users is concerned the whole area of A/V programs and "Malware" blockers is 100% full of total Bovine Scatology (B/S in plain English).

Get yourself a DECENT FIREWALL, Block all your ports (in and outbound) except for the ones you specifically have to use and ensure the firewall only lets those applications through, check very carefully when downloading stuff that you are actually downloading the file you want - websites are very good at confusing people with all sorts of green arrows etc hiding the real link, don't open email attachments from people you don't know, only download files with proper extensions from torrents such as .mp4/.mp3 etc, and use your machine sensibly.

If you follow these simple rules and just have the standard Ms Windows defender then you will be 100% safe.

Most people these days aren't infected by viruses but get scammed in all sorts of other ways which aren't "protectable" in any shape or form by Software no matter how clever the program says it is.

    Cheers

When we downloaded Windows 10 we agreed to allow Microsoft to monitor our computer use. That is why I said Windows TP was not the OS to use for personal or sensitive info. I do agree that AV programs are not 100% guaranteed to protect our computers and info. They are not 100% useless either. I would rather have some protection than no protection just in case. My seatbelts are not 100% guaranteed to save my life in a accident but I still use them.

  12. I compleatly agree as i have said before a lot of anti virus software free or otherwise have let me down in the past and malwarebytes always seems to cure most most repairs i have done to other ussers machines even when they have been using them with no AV at all.

    AV needed?

I got infected with a browser hijacker yesterday, Defender didn't defend. MBAM found a bunch of problems but didn't fix the issue. It got to the point where browsing was impossible. Had to restore a Paragon PHVD backup which I luckily made earlier.

A browser hi-jacker is something that a user installs mostly by accident. Something that a regular AV cannot stop. That's the best solution you did there. Sometimes it takes a lot more time to try to fix it. Image restoration is faster and easier to do.

It is unwanted software in a sense which is what an AV claims to prevent. I wonder if restoring a system point would have have done the same trick? It really doesn't remove it from the system just removes it from the installed list.
