  1. Available storage on SSD doens't add up

I have a 2TB SSD. Right click on the drive and it shows

    used 1,838,020,997,129 1.67TB

    Free 162,376,794 1.51TB

The drive is set to show all hidden and system files. If I select everything and right click then properties I get

    Size 1.02TB 1,128,164,706,676 bytes

Size on disk 1.02TB 1,129,703,972,864 bytes

As you can see this is a massive difference. I seem to have lost 700GB

Any ideas why. At first I assumed NTFS block sizes but I also assume size on disk reflects actual storage used.

    Cheers

    :)

SSD storage keeps filling up on its own

    Hi Ash,

There's a possibility that the files are just hidden. As an initial troubleshooting, we suggest following the steps below on how to display hidden files that's eating space of your SSD:

    • On the Search bar, type folder, and then select
Show hidden files and folders from the search results.
    • Under Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives,
      and then select OK.

Keep us in the loop with the result.

64Gb SSD for OS or 2Tb HDD for storage ?!

I suggest that you get the 2tb for storage. SSDs are only useful if you want to boot things fast like OS and programs. I actually suggest you get both if you have that many movies.

    Should SSD's be defragmented

Unlike defragging, Trim on an SSD is just Trim, it doesn't matter which program initiates it the results will be exactly the same. Trim doesn't move files, trim resets storage locations on the SSD that have had data previously stored there. There are two steps required to make a storage location available on an SSD. The first step is to delete the previous data. The second step is to reset the storage location for reuse. The first step is done on-command at the moment it is required. The second step is only performed when either there are no more reset data locations available for use or periodically, hopefully during idle periods. By waiting for an idle period to do the second step, the SSD performance is increased. The second step is the trim operation.
