Avast has Boot Time Scan if needed, Avast has Filerep feature, Cybercapture, Reputation services, I've been using Avast for the last 11 years, Feel safer with it myself on all the household systems and phone here

Maybe i'm wrong for trusting it so much, but it's my Computer, and ones I manage in the household, I have tried Defender in the past, but I seem to always end up back on Avast eventually

  2. To be fair, Smartscreen/Cloudprotection is the same like CyberCapture/Hardened Mode.
WD lacks in Reputations services, since smartscreen checks only Edge and not other browsers.

  3. Right, I do use Edge a lot, so I suppose if I really wanted to I could be fine with Defender I suppose, but for now keeps what I got

Avast - is there a way to reign in aggressive web scanning?

The only thing I really dislike about AVAST to be honest is the need to register. And how is AVAST performance-wise these days? I tested it some months ago and I wasn't all that impressed. In fact, I tested AVIRA too a few weeks ago and seemed both faster than WD and AVAST. I heard some people complaining AVAST has become very bloated over the years. Maybe choosing minimal components during installation is the way to go.

Anyway back on topic for OP: I would fully uninstall/reinstall AVAST. The behaviour you experienced with downloads doesn't seem normal.

  5. Well Avast need to Register is in the past now, as now it actives subscription autoly for free edition, always used Minimal install, As for the OP's problem I do suggest also Full uninstall, and full reinstall using the shields he/she prefers, and hopefully it will totally solve the issue that OP is experiencing
