Avast using 15-30% CPU in idle

I installed Avast anti-virus free on my new Windows 10 install, and now I'm noticing the CPU constantly fluctuating around 15-30%, when the computer is just sitting idle. Task Manager shows it is Avast.

What component of Avast is constantly running my CPU so high, and can it be disabled?

    :)

    Windows 10 Runtime broker

So i upgraded to 10 and long story and chain short here everything worked fine. Untill I updated to latest release. At first I thought it was avast as that ate most of my disk use on a hit miss timeframe. Until i saw windows broker ate %30 of CPU usage
(forcing idle speed at %95ish !) I followed the guidance of the mesage posts here and it made the problem WORSE just by me disabling notifications (from %30 to %50! Average idling speeds, causing average idle to sit around a WONDERFUL %98 useage) I cant run
any diagonstic services or restores on my side because, WINDOWS BROKER! So im stuck at an impass.

  3. "System and compressed memory" takes up all the CPU

I just assembled my new gaming rig,

and I have some issues regarding cpu usage.

On idle it can swing between 30%-100% and it is insane.

I can see in the task manager that it is mainly "Local system" and "System and compressed memory"

that takes up 10%-90% of the cpu power.

The CPU is an i5-6600K which has about a 15% tuning boost.

Avast using 15-30% CPU in idle

    Hi.
I'm not sure what component is causing that - there used to be something called NG that I found to be problematic, but I think they call it something else now (related to VMs). At any rate, when I install Avast on a system, here's what I select:

You can go into Installed Programs through Control Panel and select Avast, then select Change and uninstall the other components that way.

In uninstalled all but the 3 shields and software updater, and the CPU is now hovering around 0. I wonder which component was causing the high CPU? I had Rescue disk, Browser Protection, SafeZone browser, SecureLine, Cleanup, and Browser Cleanup installed.

How is Browser Protection different from Web shield?

    Good to hear. *Smile
I'm not sure. Probably a quick Google search will answer that. *Wink

EDIT: Please mark the thread as solved, if you are satisfied. Cheers!

I've run Avast for some time using only the 3 real-time protection shields, Repair Disk, [on-demand] Network scanner. I do not recommend using Software Updater, as far as I remember, end-user has no control over what is updated and what is not updated. Somebody correct if I'm incorrect, thanks!

Software updater only updates if you ask it to, in the free version. Not sure how it functions in the paid version (never used that). I find it useful to see what needs updating, and then go perform the updates myself.

I found Avast Free beginning to eat resource & stopped installing it on my family & friends' laptops. Avira free is my current selection

I thought AVAST was light on resources, at least some time ago. It seems it isn't true nowadays. I've heard good things about AVIRA, but I am quite satisfied with WD so far.

I don't know - you could be right about the paid version. And if it did do that, it would bother me a lot! *Wink

Yes Avast Paid Versions of Internet Security, and Premier--auto update items with Software update, manual updating with Free version

"All Avast security products for home PCs let you update your software with a single click.
Premier users don’t even need to do that, as software updates automatically in the background." Seems just for Premier it updates autoly after reading there site

Yeh it's a real shame when once-good free programs start getting bloated, ad-filled, never to be installed again.
