Windows 10: .AVI videos wont play on windows 10

I have a .avi video i am trying to play on WMP (Windows Media Player). I have the current version of WMP. The video will not play and glitches my screen before it goes completely blank. Im not even sure if its playing at all. There is no option to change file types under the current version of WMP. All other solutions from Microsoft lead me to non-existent web pages. I am always skeptical of downloading from strange websites. Please help me find a safe solution to view videos from my, what I've now discovered to be; ancient alien video recording device.

Avi videos not playing in movie maker

Does it show any error?

Have you installed the Codecs?

Though Windows Movie maker support AVI format, sometime we still encounter AVI won't play in Windows . If the AVI files are not corrupt, the main reason may be the AVI video codec problem. If the AVI file was encoded with a non-Microsoft codec or with a
codec not installed on your Windows, you will fail to play this kind of AVI video.

I would suggest you to follow these methods and check.

Method 1:

Run Hardware Troubleshooter

Follow these steps to run the troubleshooter.

a. Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.

b. Type troubleshooter in the search box and then press enter.

c. Click hardware and sound and run the
hardware and device troubleshooter.

I also recommend you to install the latest version of Movie Maker and check the issue.

Unable to view video when playing .avi files but audio plays fine on Windows 10

.avi files after upgrading to Windows 10.



Before assisting further, I would like to ask you few questions:

• Which video application are you using to play videos on the PC?
• Does the issue persists only when playing .avi files?

You may be facing the above issue due to the default player set which does not support
.avi files on your PC. Setting the right applications to open certain file types plays an important role in launching the same without any performance issue. Sometimes the file may fail to launch using the default set application due to the
corrupted or missing application file on the PC.



Follow the steps below to set default application to .avi file and check if the issue is resolved.

  Press Windows logo key on the keyboard, type
  Default programs and select the top most search result.

  Scroll the page down and click on Choose default apps by file type from the window.
