Windows 10: AVIF Files

Hello Gals and Guys -I have a notebook running Windows 11 and it tells me I need to install the AV1 and HEIC codes when I try to open them with the Photos app. I have them installed already, but it still doesn't work. Is there a way to fix this? I have a Windows 10 box along with other machines runninf macOS and Linux. None have a problem opening these files.Secondly, is there an easy way to print screen? My other machines you just need to hit a button or two and can paste it where you like, but when I hit the print screen button on my notebook, I get a popup box with some buttons on it,

Hello, I am so sorry for the inconvenience. If Windows doesn't allow you to open the file location of the app or search for the app you want to set as the default for the .avif file type through the usual methods, you can still change the default program using the "Open With" option. Here's how you can do it:

1. Locate an .avif file on your computer.
   
2. Right-click on the .avif file.
   
3. From the context menu, hover your mouse over "Open with" to reveal a submenu.
   
4. In the "Open with" submenu, click on "Choose another app."
   

If the app you want to set as default is not listed in the "Recommended apps" or "Other options" sections, follow these steps:

1. Click on "More apps" at the bottom of the "Other options" list.
   
2. If the app you want to use is still not listed, scroll down to the bottom of the "More apps" list and click on "Look for another app on this PC."
   
3. A file explorer window will open. Browse to the location where the mpv executable (mpv.exe) is located on your computer. This is usually in the "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" folder in the drive where mpv is installed.
   
4. Once you locate the mpv.exe file, select it and click the "Open" button
   
5. Windows will now use mpv as the default program for opening .avif files.

AVIF support not working?

At first my Photos required the AV1 extension to be added, with a link to install it from the Store.

Once installed I got exactly the same as you, a brief flash of the photo then '...corrupted'. However, this would appear to be the correct diagnosis, as Photos has no trouble opening any of the other AVIF examples of this image. Yes, fox.profile0.10bpc.yuv420.monochrome.avif does indeed appear to be corrupted!

And the same applies to Irfanview, it can open any of the other examples.

You're right! I downloaded the first image from the list on that site you shared and it opens OK in Photos, IV, and Paint. Case solved. Thanks again!
