Windows 10: Background image went black and can’t be changed

Hello everybody,

I’m currently using a Thinkpad laptop with Windows 10 that I borrowed from my university (I don’t own it). When I first got it, it had the desktop wallpaper so I changed it to a more exciting image.

About two days later, I noticed that the wallpaper had randomly turned completely black. I went to personalization settings to change it back, but when I went there everything was grayed out with the message “some of these settings are hidden or managed by your organization”.

Initially I thought my university was preventing me from changing it, but that hypothesis doesn’t make sense because I had just changed it a few days previously. The only other reason I can think of is maybe the computer got some sort of virus, as I visited a semi-sketchy website to watch a free stream of Thursday Night Football lol. But I never downloaded anything from the website.

I’ve been reading multiple forums online trying every method to change the background back or disable any options that prevent the background from being changed, including the registry editor. None of these methods have solved the issue.

Does anyone have any other idea as to how this can be fixed, it’s purely cosmetic so it’s not the biggest problem in the world, it’s just quite frustrating to have to endure the most lame wallpaper and be prevented from changing it.

In order to help you better, could you please confirm a couple of things.

• Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue?
• Are you referring to desktop background image or lock screen image?

I suggest you to follow the below steps to change the background picture and check if it helps.

• In the search type as ‘Settings’ and click on it.
• Select ‘Personalization’, under ‘Background’ option select as ‘Picture’.
• Under ‘Choose your picture’ select any picture accordingly or you can browse the picture from your computer.
