  1. Backing up moderate/large amounts of data?

I saw a couple discussions about backing up larger amounts of data, but mostly they complained about how bad backing up to the Cloud was...

I have a moderate amount of data - my desktop, NOT including the system is around 4 TB, 2.5 TB in one partition and growing. I'm currently using the free version of Syncback to keep a mirror of my data. It works, but there's no "versioning". At 1 a.m. daily Syncback copies changed and new images to the backup. Periodically, when the system is stable I run a cleanup the deletes all the stuff on the backup that's been deleted from the source.

So, if I have a problem, I've got 'til 1 a.m. to get back the previous file.

I looked at the Cloud, but there's no gigabit service here. I'm on a 20 Mb/s line with 2 Mb/s upload - optimistic as on a GOOD day if I see 10 down and 1.5 up it's good. So shoving 3 or 4 TB off to Backblaze or someone is going to take days or weeks IF it stays up and runs perfectly, which it doesn't.

I've currently got a couple 8TB drives and a 6 TB I rotate for backups - using the 3,2,1 method - 1 in the system, 1 in the fire safe, 1in the detached garage. They're big enough for the 4 weeks of Macrium system backups and all the data from Syncback...

But, how do y'all with a moderate amount of data - 3 - 4 - 5 TB handle multiple week backups with full and incrementals for all the data? 12-16TB HDD? RAID with a lot of disks? Just do what I've been doing and have one current mirror, and a couple generations of older mirrors? And if you're doing backups, how do you get them done in a reasonable amount of time - say between 1 and 6 a.m. With the speeds I'm seeing to hard drives, it'd be at least 9 hours just to backup the 2.5 TB of images, not counting everything else.

    :)

  2. Transferring a large amount of data

Thank you for your input. This transfer of a large amount of data is a one-off for me and it is highly likely that I won't ever do it again. I certainly don't think that it is worth the outlay to convert to USB 3.0.

If I can just get confirmation as to the best way to carry out the transfer and, that my Seagate SSD is suitable to use as the home for my data to be used on a daily basis, then I will be happy.
