  1. backup to network drive asks for credentials

I'm getting ready to create a system image of my wife's computer. I wish to put it on a logical drive partition on an external drive that is connected to my computer and shared through our home lan. We are both hardwired to the LAN through ethernet. I can access it from her file explorer. PASSWORD PROTECTION IS TURNED OFF. All other sharing works. Yet, when I try to make the system image through Windows 7 backup in control panel it asks for network credentials. The "Next" button is greyed out unless I put something in the box. But when I try to use my login for my computer I get an error

    :)

    Asking for Network Credentials

Sounds like a 'persistence' issue, i.e. A has the credentials to access B 'stored' with the 'persistent' flag set but B doesn't have the credentials to access A stored persistently (or it's corrupted), hence the request.

    Try:

    1. Open Credential Manager (in B's Control Panel, i.e. Start > Search > control > Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Credential Manager).
    2. Open Windows Credentials (on the right-hand side).
    3. Search for (and remove) any credential for A (in case it's corrupt).
    4. Use Add a Windows credential to add a new network access credential for A (by entering the network address [e.g. computername], Username and Password then click on the OK button.
If all goes well, when this completes you can open the credential and should see Persistence: Enterprise mentioned underneath the Password field:

    Hope this helps...

Using network hard drive for backup

It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

Download Back Up Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks

and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.

backup to network drive asks for credentials

When setting up a system image backup to a network drive it ask for my credentials

    *Original title: Backup

When setting up a system image backup to a network drive it ask for my credentials, I give them and it always gives a error as not valid. I've setup 2 other PC's to the same drive with no errors. This is on W10 with all the latest updates on all 3 PC's
