Windows 10: Bad video playback after Windows 10 2004 fresh install

I have an HP spectre x360 that has an nvidia geforce 940mx. It came with a previous version of windows 10 but I have upgraded to 2004 with no issues. Just now I did a fresh install from a newly created windows 10 2004 usb stick. There was initially a problem with the display. It had vertical white "ghosting" not sure if this is thr right word. The dark areas above light areas were lightened and had very faint copies of the light areas. To fix this, I tried rolling back the video driver. This did fix the ghosting. I then tried updating the video driver again and the ghosting still did not come back, so that problem was solved somehow.


But then I noticed another problem: video playback was choppy. The playback on media player and movies & photos seems OK, but I like using VLC and smplayer and both of those apps are playingchoppy video. I tried installing the geforce 940mx for this laptom from hp.com which didn't fix the issue. Next I installed the latest driver from nvidia.com but it did not fix the issue. When installing the new drivers I did chose delete all settings/cache.Although before this fresh install VLC and smplayer worked perfectly out of the box with no altered settings, I did try modifying several settings in those apps such as buffer time and hardware acceleration. I have not installed any 3rd party malware detector. The problem is almost certainly not malware as I've only installed a few well known opensource apps from the official distribution sites. I've tried video troubleshooter, which only suggested I go to video playback settings which has no relevant settings.


So it seem the video driver is probably not the issue, and the issue is not the app either, because I had been using the same versions on the pervious install, and they are also 2 completely different apps with the same problem. I just don't know what could be causing these apps to work incorrectly but microsoft still plays video back fine.

I suggest you to run the video playback troubleshooter and check if it resolves the issue. Follow the below steps.

  Press Windows + X keys on the keyboard and select
  Control Panel
  
• 
  Type Troubleshooting in the search bar on the
  Control Panel.
  
• 
  Click on Hardware and devices under
  Troubleshoot computer problems.
  
• 
  Click on Video playback under Windows.
  
• 
  Click on Advanced on the Video playback dialog box and click on
  Run as administrator (Enter the credentials if required).
  
• 
  Click on Next and follow onscreen instruction complete the Video playback troubleshooter.

Windows 10 video playback problems

Method 1: Run the Video Playback troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Follow the below steps:

• Type troubleshooting in the search bar.
• Select Troubleshooting.
• Select View all on the top left corner.
• Click on Video Playback.
• Follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.

If the issue persists then follow the below method.

Method 2:

I suggest you to update the Display adapters driver from the Device Manager and check if it works.

Follow the below steps:

• Right click on Start button and click on Device Manager.
• Select the Graphic driver from the list by extending Display adapters.
• Right click on the Graphic driver and click on Update driver Software.

If the issue persists then install the latest graphic driver from the manufacturer and check if it helps.
