Windows 10: Battery problem - software related issues, shutting down at 20%

Hi all,

I have a HP Envy 13 laptop, which is less than year old. 3 months ago, I decided to clean install Windows 10 (to get rid of unnecessary HP apps), and after an upgrade, my battery started to act weird. All of the drivers are generic from HP website and nothing's missing.

The problem persists after everything I have tried:
-recalibrating the battery
- plugging and unplugging the battery
- reinstalling battery drivers
- installing Windows again
- resetting the power plans
-etc

Nothing works. Here is the problem:

The battery low and critical percentage is set as follows: 20% and 5%. When the battery level reaches 20%, the computer goes into sleep (without any notice, there is just sound of low battery notification, that gets shut because computer goes to sleep), wakes up immediately, showing 8% of battery, and sleeps again after a few minutes. When I wake it up, the battery indicator shows 0% available and I can use the laptop for 30 minutes or so, until it shuts itself down.

When I plug the power cord, while it shows 0%, it immediately shows 21% available (madness). When put into BIOS, it can withstand staying on, until battery is fully discharged. It can work while BIOS is on, but cannot be turned on normally - the cord has to be plugged.

Battery check shows 83% battery health, and the problem did not persist before the installation of Windows.
I honestly do not know how to deal with this anymore.

Because it works normally in BIOS, I suspect this is software relatede issue.

Any clues, what can I try?

When you reinstalled Windows again, you grabbed all of the available HP drivers for your system? There should also be an HP Power Utility application to install.

Is the BIOS running the latest version for this computer?

I do not have HP Power Utility System - the factory preinstalled apps from HP are the ones that I wanted to remove - I did not install this software from their website, as it is not a driver itself.

The BIOS is the newest version. I'll try to install the app.

Windows has not been installed from "RECOVERY" partition, but from scratch.

 

I understand you wanted to get rid of the HP tools, but at the moment something that was running on the computer was supporting the battery. Let me know the outcome of using the application. You can always uninstall it again.

How old is the system? In the HP diagnostics menu, does it inform you of the cycle count of the battery? This menu is a boot option before getting into Windows. I believe it will appear from hitting F2 during startup.

Installed the software, nothing changed. Somehow, no software shows the cycle count, the system was used for about 3 months with the problem remaining, and the recent one is 2 months old. Running without any issues, except the battery.

As I mentioned, full charge capacity shows 80% battery health. Any other ideas? I'm fully out..

 

At thing point I'm out of ideas as well. My last recommendation would be to replace the battery with an OEM unit.

 

Make a Battery Report. That will include the cycle count and a lot of other useful information, such as the full charge capacity vs. the design capacity.

You could usefully check the Power Plan settings in Control Panel > Power options. Click 'Change plan settings', then 'Change advanced power options'. Look at what your 'low battery action' is set to.

 

Already did the battery report, and checked. It does not show the cycle count, and as previously said, full hcarge capacity is at 80%.
Furthermore, low battery action is obviously checked on "do nothing". The problem is that the percentage shown by Windows drops instantly from 20% to 8% - computer goes to sleep and instantly wakes, showing 8%.
