So I got myself a nice little Soundmixer.exe viral infection. I SEEM to have got rid of the infection but in doing so appear to have mildly... 'broken' Windows 10.

In short, before, a .bat would run at startup and try to run soundmixer.exe. That played havoc. I eventually cleaned the bat out, so I thought, and removed the soundmixer virus. But I've been left with this.

It reminds me of the old DOS days when you booted into DOS and then exe'd for Windows 3.1, or slightly later when you would deliberately boot into DOS for Windows 95. Only there's no DOS here.

This basically precedes the desktop now - I've looked in every startup location I can think of and got rid of any miscreants but this is now the state of play; I have to ctrl alt del to force start explorer and then it does start just fine.

But I'd like rid of the command prompt black screen.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers.

    :)

  2. SoundMixer.exe virus pops up

    Hey Pulkit

Its a random virus which creates an autorun registry at

    Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor

Just open Registry editor and delete Autorun Key at the above location.

If this repeats then go to YOUR_USER_NAME/APPDATA/Roaming/Microsoft and delete a folder named SoundMixer.

SoundMixer is the name of the virus.

"SEEM to have got rid of the infection"

How did you 'seem' to do that ? Did you run Defender/Malwarebytes ? SUPERantispyware free will do an even deeper scan even in quick mode. These infections have a way of hiding in the registry to keep retriggering. If all these steps fail, you can either clean install or wait of Fall Creators Update to upgrade your OS.

They didn't. I'd run MWB which failed, but thanks to this post gave Superantispyware a shot - I used to like it, then intensely disliked it, but then seeing your post and feeling a little out of options thought I'd give it a shot. It found the infection, and cleaned it no trouble. This scanner has clearly massively improved and evidently has beaten Kaspersky and MWB in this case.

So, thank you for the advice, it worked very nicely indeed *Smile
