    Best free antivirus/antispyware 2018

I'm looking for the best antivirus/antispyware program. I'm using windows defender right now, but I want to try something better. Will test the suggestions given in this thread and give my thoughts.

    1. Superantispyware
Seems to mostly find tracking cookies, but occasionally finds some spyware as well.

    2. Avast
Didn't find anything, took a suspiciously long time to install, and went nuts when i tried to uninstall it. Blacklisted.

    3. Malwarebytes
Didn't find anything besides slimdrivers, which is neither spyware or a virus, but a program i use to update my computer with. Seems a bit laggy and unresponsive sometimes.

    4. Adwcleaner
Adwarecleaner gave me the best results. It's a portable program, so you will have to run it on your computer everytime you want to scan for spyware, which is a bit annoying. Also seems to delete slimdrivers.

    5. Adaware
Took a suspiciously long time to install, didn't help with anything and was annoying to uninstall. Used to be my go to antispyware program back in the days.

    6. AVG
Insanely slow to install and hangs several times during the installation. It most likely installs a lot of files that aren't necesarry. People are reporting issues with uninstalling it. Blacklisted.

    7. Comodo
Asks if you want to install a lot of junk files, e.g. yahoo toolbars, comodo shopping, etc. If you say no it will install it regardless. Blacklisted.

    8. Kaspersky
Slow to install and seems to install various programs. Also seems to conflict with firefox by disabling access to harmless websites like google. I had to uninstall it to regain access to the internet.

Conclusion: most of the spyware and antivirus programs seems to cause more problems than they solve, but there a few good ones that works. I chose super anti spyware as my spyware program.

    :)

  2. Kin Antivirus and AntiSpyware

    Hi Vince,

No antispyware is needed as there is no spyware available to hack your KIN due to its operating system.

  3. Kin Antivirus and AntiSpyware

I just purchased a KinOne. I don't have a data plan; however, I love the WiFi access feature it provides. Is there an Antivirus or Antispyware I should upload to it? Is there a free application you can recommend like SuperAntiSpyWare or Avira?

  11. I can't tell you what is best, so I will just let you know what I use.
So far this combination works best for me.

I use Windows 10 Defender and Windows 10 Firewall. "Active"
    I use Malwarebytes Premium. "Active"

I use AdwCleaner, Super Anti Spyware, Free on demand only.

At times I use Eset free online scanner.
Some times it finds things other programs don't.

I manually keep all programs updated. That is very important in my opinion.

I use the Paid version of Bitdefender which is a fully integrated system.

I set it up and set to "Autopilot" and rarely hear from it, or even know it's running, except for a weekly report and a few Anti-ransomware alerts, any new program will be prevented from writing to, or modifying, any "protected" areas, until I review and allow it

As a complete system it is unlimited devices and works with Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS devices so provides a multi-point defence against threats getting onto my systems

Yes it costs money, but, for me, £35 a year is acceptable, and the free version uses the same technologies as this version, but without the integration, and BD is regularly at the top of the Comparative sites and has been for a long time

    Hi folks.

With Windows 10 these days I doubt whether ANYTHING extra is needed provided you keep system up to date and follow basic rules below.

Set your Windows firewall rules properly (standard Windows Firewall)

    Surf safely

Avoid the usual email pitfalls - e.g opening attachments from unknown sources - especially .zip, .rar, .exe files etc

Avoid typical scams -- e.g sites that look like the actual ones you are trying to reach

Don't give out too much info on social media --that's the most common way people get "Identity Hacked" these days.

USE ROUTER FIREWALL -- this is usually mega good and has very good logs - I doubt whether anybody other than a tiny fraction here ever bother but the Router's built in firewall is probably one of the best ways of blocking who gets IN to your system (and if something has got INTO your system can also control what gets OUT).

In any case I don't have anything on my computer that anybody would find in the least bit interesting or certainly profitable.

If I were to get Ransomeware - I'd just UNPLUG computer from mains and internet immediately, disconnect from Internet, wipe the HDD and restore from clean backup. So ALWAYS HAVE CLEAN BACKUPS - you can never have too many of those.

For Home (I differentiate here between HOME and Corporate users as that's another ball game entirely) if you follow the simple rules followed above there's no reason in a MILLION years why your computer would ever get hacked or infected -- I've never been infected in over 30 years of using Windows -- just be VERY careful when you download anything and READ before clicking the mouse so as never to install the "Extra bits" like toolbars etc and ensure what you download comes from a legit source and is actually the item you really want.

    Cheers

It also depends on your activity. For instance I use my computer for leisure and work. For work I visit hospital websites and you can imagine that some websites change over time or hospitals get bought out and someone else buys the domain for nefarious reasons.

  15. Jimbo makes some very good points.
No security programs will do everything to protect your computers if the owner/operator don't do their part.
