  1. Best way to disable internal card reader

I’m getting an issue where very occasionally windows won’t boot. It goes past post and then just sits on the ASUS logo. Where the dots at the bottom normally indicate the few secs of loading windows they will be missing. The remedy is easy as I just hit the reset button on my case and it will then be fine. I noted it doesn’t matter if it’s a cold boot or restart, happened in both scenarios. Fast boot is not a culprit as I always turn that off.

It it must be said this is very rare. I only noticed it starting after fall creators update. And it’s happens about 4 or 5 times since September. In that time I must of booted the machine over 200 times. I am wondering if the creators update is to blame and maybe it’ll go away when we reach the next spring creators. However I did consider the internal 52 in 1 card reader could be to blame. Basically it stopped working a few months ago. There is no exclamation mark in device manager on windows but it doesn’t read anything. No great drama as I barely use it and wish I’d never opted for it when configuring the machine. I remember once leaving a card in it and it prevented the machine booting (as it was failing) until I removed the card. It makes me think (although unlikely) it could be interfering with the boot process. So I thought it’s best disabled. I wish it was just an external one that could be easily removed.

i double checked the bios boot order and it is not on the list and the order of priority is all correct. A while back I even updated the bios to the latest available as it was quite out of date. But that made no difference as the problem has happened before and after. I do connect my pc to a ups but I don’t think it’s the problem as the issue is so rare and the ups is in good health and also happily supplying my monitor and also my Mac without anything like this. I think it’s a possible windows issue but the fact it’s so rare does puzzle me. I guess I worry most that it does this during a system restart to install updates (it never has so far) which is never good to interfere with

    cheers
    Wayne

  2. Fast Computer, Slow Boot caused by Memory Card Reader

If you are using an internal card reader, you need to disable the internal card reader under the Boot Sequence in your BIOS. We recommend contacting your PC manufacturer for better assistance.

Let us know if you need anything else. We're here to help.

Best way to disable internal card reader

A built-in card reader is not difficult to disable completely if you wish to try this. Just remove the side of the PC (left side when looking at the front). Find the rear of the reader, or it's connecting cable if it's visible and pull the plug from the motherboard connector. They attach to one of the onboard USB headers which are usually located at the bottom of the motherboard.

I should mention that the PC should be switched off when you do this. You can do it with the machine powered up but it's best to be safe.

  5. Ok thank you. Just say getting into the internals was a bit of an issue (I won't bore you with the details of that!). Can I disable it somehow within BIOS or is that not an option?

That would depend on the BIOS options you have on your model. I don't think it's possible with most....

  7. Ok, thank you. The problem i have may not be to do with the card reader but I thought it worth pursuing. Maybe I'll have a nose around in the BIOS later on

additional - yep no obvious way to disable it in the BIOS. Probably is possible but no idea what I’m looking at or doing. Shame because whilst I know one can easily disable it within windows I don’t think it’ll help as it’s too late in the boot process. I’m clutching at straws anyhow thinking this could be the reason.

Best way to disable internal card reader

See if there is a BIOS option to disable it. If not, just disable it in Device Manager.

    This may not always work.

For example on my Lenovo laptop I can boot from SD card (without loading Windows at all) so Device Manager settings wouldn't help as it is seen as bootable device before Windows loads.

The only way to stop it is to physically disconnect it as I don't have any BIOS option.
