Beware some sata PCie cards kill hard Disks (recoverable though)

    Hi folks

needed some extra sata ports on a PC -- used a "cheapo" 16X pcie card -- and guess what the 4 HDD's I had in the system were flagged as totally dead -- even BIOS cold boot couldn't see them.

Anyway removed card and BIOS still didn't see the HDD's.

Removed then (I'm an engineer --old fashioned type and simply don't believe 4 HDD's suddenly fail at the same time without seeing either a n electrical flash / blue smoke or smelling something ) -- so I removed the HDD's and inserted them into a Linux server and cold booted.

The Server bios recognized the HDD's -- formatted them with XFS (just to ensure the HDD's were also writeable) and then re-inserted these into the PC that failed to recognize the HDD's.

No prob =--BIOS recognized the HDD's and I could format them GPT and re-install windows.

If I had believed the original diagnosis I would have either chucked 4 X 4TB HDD's away or the PC or even both.

That external SATA card must have screwed up something horribly !! fortunately it was only a 15 EUR mistake and a few hours of time.

Don't always assume that if something fails once it is always faulty - especially if you are talking about multiple devices -- had in this instance say 3 out of the 4 HDD's initially worked I would have tossed 1 HDD -- but 4 out of 4 is so unlikely it was worth testing again.!!!

    Cheers
    jimbo

    :)

  2. pcie sata controller cards for 2010 board speed.

ya the motherboard had gen 1 pcie ports or verson 1.1. i also tested 2 hard drives with crystal disk mark. the seagate barrauda drive seems to hit close to max speeds on sata port where acer 320 drive well it slow and all.
so if i bought sata 3 pcie card with this ssd ADATA Premier SP580 SSD, 2.5in, SATA III, 120GB at Memory Express - Memory Express Inc. i won't get close to read/writes speeds on that motherboard

  3. SATA Hard disk problems

    Hi David,

Thank you for sharing this to the Microsoft Community. Since you've mentioned that you've done a series of troubleshooting steps, we recommend that you follow these steps for possible solution:

    • Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box then type in
      diskmgmt.msc
      .
    • On the DIsk Management, assign a driver letter to the drive. You need to initialize and format it.

Disclaimer: Formatting the drive will lose all data in the drive.

    Looking forward to the result.

How to install PCIE SATA 3 board

Not sure of the card you purchased, the one I have will show up in the BIOS/UEFI Boot with a suggestion that pressing the M key will allow editing setting up a raid etc.
Using this card in windows 8.1 I was required to install a Driver, In Windows 10 the card was automatically recognized. It sounds like the first PCI slot you used has an issue? Transfer speed through SATA III of 120 MB/S is normal depending on the Chipset of the external Case and the hard drive itself. I get slightly faster transfer speeds with Fantom Case and WD Black hard drives 130 MB/s and slightly less with the same case and hard drive USB 3.0 mode. I stick with the eSATA as it is more reliable than USB 3.0
